The current FL5-series is the latest iteration, and it happens to be the most extreme example ever.

It’s the most powerful, produces the most downforce, and has the largest body, but it’s also the most expensive production Civic Type R to date. That hasn’t affected its popularity, though, which brings us to the elephant in the room.

If you’re in Australia, you can’t actually buy one new from your local Honda showroom, at least not right now. FL5 supply has been sporadic at best since its introduction in early 2023, as Honda Australia has only been able to secure small batches of a few hundred units every so often.

Orders opened for the most recent allocation in July 2026, and all 98 examples were snapped up in no time. It’s unknown when more will be available for purchase in Australia again, but Honda has said it’s confident there will be at least one more batch coming here.

However, there is good news. Plenty of used examples are currently for sale privately and at dealers, and since there have been no real updates to the current Type R since it was launched, you won’t be missing out on much performance if you buy one that’s a few years old. Prices for such vehicles aren’t too obscene, either.

That said, an update was just revealed for the US, but we don’t know whether it’ll come to Australia as part of the next batch of Type Rs, if it arrives. Some of the equipment introduced in that US-market update was already included in previous Australian-delivered vehicles, aside from recalibrated suspension, improved auto rev-matching, improved brake feel, added front downforce, and heated seats.

Still, the Civic Type R you see on test here is largely indicative of what you’ll get in a used FL5. In fact, our press car is actually a 2024 model with more than 8000km under its belt, courtesy of various Australian media outlets.

So, is the Civic Type R still the front-wheel drive hot hatch king?

How much does the Honda Civic cost?

Prices have stayed steady since the most recent batch of Type Rs arrived Down Under in February 2026, dropping only $500 for the July allocation. It now costs $85,000 drive-away, a cool $12,400 more than when it was launched in 2023.

ModelDrive-away price2027 Honda Civic e:HEV L$49,9002027 Honda Civic e:HEV LX$55,9002027 Honda Civic Type R$85,000

That comfortably places it among the most expensive hot hatches on sale locally. It’s pretty difficult to ignore the bright red sports buckets up front, so let’s start there.

Find your perfect new car with CarExpert

These are easily among the most aggressive seats fitted to any commuter-based performance model – much more so than the GR Corolla and Golf R, for example – and the Type R is all the better for it.

Your body remains firmly stuck within the seat’s exaggerated bolstering, allowing you to focus on driving instead of expending brain and muscle power trying to keep yourself from sliding about.

In fact, the seat-base bolsters are so large that it’s noticeably harder to get in and out of the Type R than the normal Civic. The car’s lower ride height also contributes to this, but hey, we’re not complaining – the end product is well worth the minor inconvenience.

Then there’s the ‘suede-style’ seat upholstery, which is far grippier than leather but comes at the cost of seat heating. That isn’t a dealbreaker, and it clearly demonstrates just how focused the Type R is compared to its performance rivals.

What’s less surprising is the lack of steering wheel heating, a standard Civic feature removed for the Type R. That’s because of the uncommon Alcantara wrap, which heralds this car’s sporting intent alongside the red background of the Honda logo.

The wheel is nice to hold, and its large diameter makes the car feel all the more substantial. Mind you, the Alcantara trim is less durable than leather and requires extra care to maintain. Our tester’s wheel was already showing signs of shininess at nine and three o-clock with roughly 8500km on the odometer.

Still, the wheel contributes to the car’s brilliant ergonomics. It truly feels like you sit ‘in’ the car rather than ‘on’ it, with the front seats nestled incredibly low in the cabin. Combine that with the high dash and tall-ish centre console and there’s a true cockpit experience here.

Nothing feels too far away, and the stubby manual shifter falls nicely to hand. It’s worth noting the metal shift knob gets both freezing cold when left overnight and scorching hot when parked in the sun, though it’s weighty and otherwise satisfying to interact with.

Additionally, the metal plate on the centre console not only complements the shift knob but also creates a point of interest for the rest of the cabin. It’s a bit of bling amid a sea of black and red, helping the Type R feel genuinely special alongside the red seats and carpet.

Beyond that, the items carried over from the regular Civic make this car easier to live with. The clicky buttons on the steering wheel and centre console are great, as are the notchy climate dials and large vent adjusters within that hexagonal grille mesh.

Then there’s the tech, which very much embodies Honda’s generally subdued style and therefore isn’t particularly flashy. Instead, it’s functional and clean.

The 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen perched atop the dashboard is a clear example of this. It’s not only unobtrusive, but it’s snappy enough and easy to understand – we’d argue this is an ideal system for such a car regardless of whether others may want something more space-age.

Granted, its native graphics are very basic, but it offers reliable wireless Apple CarPlay as standard – Android Auto is wired-only. This screen is also where you’ll find the LogR data app, which lets you keep track of all vehicle data and even lap times when you hit the track.

The 10.2-inch digital instrument display backs up this performance-minded character. Its appearance is tied to drive modes, with most ‘normal’ modes presenting a digitised two-gauge display that’s nearly identical to that of a normal Civic.

Things get far more exciting in +R mode. This switches to a horizontal rev counter with a huge gear indicator – usually the most important focus points on-track – and draws attention to the F1-style shift lights above. As boy-racer as this may look, it’s still very cool.

For the more sensibly minded folk, there’s still plenty to like about the Type R’s cabin. We’ve already mentioned Honda’s high-quality interior controls, but it’s also commendable that this performance car is still appropriately practical.

Not only does it feel spacious compared to something like a GR Corolla, but there’s also a comfortable number of storage options. Most useful are the central cupholders, mounted low to avoid bottles impeding your left arm when shifting, and the rubberised wireless phone charger with little barriers to keep your device in place.

There’s a small cubby under the padded yet vaguely awkward central armrest, which you’ll notice is cupped out to make space for the cupholders. You also get a passenger-side glovebox and bottle holders in the doors.

Rounding things out are a pair of USB-A ports and a 12V outlet below the climate controls, and in typical Honda fashion, build quality is very good. Even our relatively high-mileage tester was comfortably rattle-free.

The second row is comparatively spartan, with only bottle slots and cupholders as amenities. Unlike the Civic hybrid, the Type R is a four-seater, and the plastic holes in the middle seat deter you from sneakily packing in a fifth occupant. The 3D-print-like texture of the plastic seatbacks is also a bit odd.

There’s at least a reasonable amount of space for rear occupants as far as small cars go, and the bench is appointed in black suede with red stitching and seatbelts. The only issue is that the two seating positions aren’t very sculpted, which means occupants will be thrown about during spirited driving.

The Civic’s liftback hatch allows for a deep boot with plenty of space. There isn’t really anything remarkable here, other than that it’s among the largest among small performance cars, the rear seatbacks fold almost flat to create a huge cargo hold, and there’s no spare wheel.

Other than that, the only thing we’d like the Type R to have is a better sound system. Once you’re used to the Bose system in the normal Civics, the unbranded system in this $85,000 car is underwhelming, even for a performance car. Thank goodness everything else is done so brilliantly.

DimensionsHonda Civic Type RLength4606mmWidth1890mmHeight1407mmWheelbase2735mmCargo capacity410L (rear seats up)
1212L (rear seats folded)

To see how the Honda Civic stacks up against the competition, check out our comparison tool

What’s under the bonnet?

Powering the Type R is Honda’s venerable ‘K20C1’ engine, a high-revving turbocharged DOHC 2.0-litre petrol four with VTEC exhaust cam phasing. It produces 235kW of power and 420Nm of torque, with drive sent exclusively through a six-speed manual transmission to the front wheels in traditional Type R fashion.

SpecificationsHonda Civic Type REngine2.0L 4cyl turbo-petrolPower235kWTorque420NmTransmission6-speed manualDrive typeFront-wheel driveKerb weight1429kg0-100km/h (claimed)5.4 secondsFuel economy (claimed)8.7L/100kmFuel economy (as tested)9.3L/100kmFuel tank capacity47LFuel requirement95-octane premium unleadedCO2 emissions199g/kmEmissions standardEuro 6b

Our week with the Type R primarily involved highway commuting, but also the requisite share of spirited driving. It certainly sounds like a high-performance four-banger should from inside the car, though we do wish its huge triple-exit exhaust made a bit more noise outside.

On the road, the most immediate impression is how easy the Type R is to learn. Regardless of your previous manual transmission experience, you should have no problem learning the clutch bite point, shifter action, and throttle response – it’s so easy to drive smoothly right off the bat.

Intuitive isn’t often a word that comes to mind with ‘high-performance’ manuals, which makes the Type R all the more impressive.

Some might also be surprised to find the clutch pedal action relatively light. It avoids the meaty, mechanical action of older performance cars and instead has a more direct, low-effort character which perfectly fits the car’s overall package.

As does the shifter, which is very notchy with a short throw. It feels nice and positive, allowing it to be quickly ‘flicked’ between gears and adding to this car’s approachable nature. It also offers very well calibrated automatic rev-matching on downshifts, which is great if you can’t be bothered heel-toeing yourself.

If you do prefer the old-fashioned way, the auto throttle-blipping function can easily be disabled via the touchscreen. That exposes the sharp throttle calibration, which not only makes downshifts less of a chore, but also makes delicate inputs far easier.

That’s important in a front-wheel drive car with this much power. The Type R doesn’t respond well to lead-footedness, as it’s easy to break traction at the front tyres, especially in the wet. This may be the easiest way to bounce off the redline, but it isn’t particularly efficient for acceleration, fuel consumption, or tyre life.

Ready to buy? It’s just about liveable in Comfort mode, but more mature folk will no doubt prefer something a bit more compliant. But that firmness brings a high level of roadholding and agility in corners, as well as straight-line stability, inspiring confidence in both circumstances.

Likewise, the steering always errs on the heavier side and feels direct in normal driving. It gets heavier in Sport mode, but also more communicative, hinting at what’s still to come.

Everything really kicks off when you hit the dedicated +R button. This is really the Type R’s ‘track mode’, where the throttle is incredibly sharp, the suspension is extremely firm, and the steering feels heavier and way more direct than before.

The result is one of the most rewarding hot hatch experiences you’ll get in any new car. The Type R’s cornering grip is borderline unimaginable, instilling great confidence as you start to pick up the pace.

Its rear-end will pivot into turns, providing plenty of lift-off oversteer like any front-driven hot hatch should, and its sharp front-end is legitimately outstanding in the way it bites into the road, straightens up the car, and sends it exactly where you point it.

It makes sharp-ish country-road bends completely effortless, to the point where body roll somehow becomes a foreign concept, and you wish you’d tackled that last corner harder.

You’re unlikely to run into serious understeer if you aren’t too silly, and torque steer is well managed even under wide-open throttle antics mid-corner. You won’t notice more than a hint of tyre slip if you accelerate hard while turning, but the car still responds best to patience and measured pedal inputs.

The +R mode also brings changes inside. The instrument display switches to an F1-inspired layout with red accents and a huge gear ratio indicator, while pronounced synthesised engine noise comes through the speakers, which we could do without.

Truthfully, it’s nearly impossible to get the most out of the Type R on public roads, whether you’re keen on keeping your licence or not. This level of cornering traction begs you to carry plenty of speed out of turns, and it takes serious self-control not to give in with a healthy dose of throttle, even if it’s just to feel that turbo/VTEC rush.

But that’s where the versatility theme comes back into play. While the engine certainly does its best work at high RPMs, you don’t have to drive the Type R at 9/10ths to enjoy it, because it’s still relatively tractable and the fun shifter action and fantastic brakes are constants regardless of the driving conditions.

Further, the sporty seats are so supportive and well-bolstered that it always feels like you’re in a race car, yet without the compromised outright comfort. Keep in mind, the front-seat bolstering is way better than that in the second row, so people in the back will be hanging on for dear life if you pick up the cornering pace.

The only real concern is that the +R suspension setting is far too firm for normal driving.

It’s uncomfortably crashy, and really best reserved for smooth racetracks. Funnily enough, overall comfort in +R mode is one of the key improvements of that US-market update, along with recalibrated rev-matching on downshifts – somehow making them even smoother than they already were, apparently.

Perhaps it’s Australia’s shoddy roads that exacerbate the +R mode’s stiffness, because some bumps and divots we encountered in regional Victoria genuinely felt like they could do some real damage to the Type R without due care. The toned-down Sport mode generally handles public roads a bit better.

Refinement could also be better. Road noise is the main concern, as the thin rubber on the 19-inch alloys does no favours for sound insulation, or ride comfort for that matter.

It’s very boomy on coarse-chip road surfaces, which again has us wanting a better sound system to cut through the roar. It’s worth remembering that rivals like the GR Corolla and M135 have better audio setups: JBL for Toyota and Harman Kardon for BMW.

But this is a hot hatch par excellence and these are nitpicks in what is otherwise a brilliant driving experience. The Type R feels beautifully balanced between old-school brashness and modern-day savviness, with a subdued rawness preserved by the tasteful, measured inclusion of some welcome technological flair.

And, as with the interior, there are still plenty of positives from the regular Civic hatch present here. Outward visibility remains excellent – even with the big wing on the back – and there’s just enough unintrusive safety gear to help you along. The quality of the reversing camera still leaves a lot to be desired, though.

All told, the All Hondas delivered before October 1, 2026 – including the most recent batch of Type Rs – were eligible for five scheduled services capped at $199 each. Now, that has increased to $279 each for all Honda cars, excluding the new Super-One, which remains at $199.

That means future Australian-delivered Type Rs will likely be subject to the new $279 service price, totalling $1395 over five years.

Still, Honda’s maintenance costs are hard to beat. Toyota, for example, outlines shorter six-month, 10,000km intervals for the GR Corolla, which means three years of capped-price servicing will cost $2010. Hyundai, meanwhile, quotes five years of i30 N manual servicing at $2158.

As for the Europeans, five years of servicing will cost $3893 for the Golf R, $2470 for the 135 xDrive as a prepaid plan, and $2190 for the Leon VZx, also part of a prepaid plan.

To see how the Honda Civic stacks up against the competition, check out our comparison tool

CarExpert’s Take on the Honda Civic Type R

The Civic Type R remains a phenomenal car, even if the price rises are becoming tough to swallow.

It’s fast, agile, fun to drive, and feels like a proper performance car. There’s absolutely no questioning the worth of the engineering under the skin, as the car doesn’t feel old or out of date in any way, and it’s just as capable as ever of tackling the big dogs of all-wheel drive hot hatch world.

That said, there is the argument that Honda should make the Type R all-wheel drive to maximise the platform’s potential, and indeed its current asking price doesn’t scream value for money given its front-drive layout.

I don’t necessarily agree with the all-wheel drive thing – front-wheel drive is Honda’s self-imposed performance challenge and it makes the Type R unique – because it’s clear this is a much more sophisticated car than something like an i30 N, even if Hyundai’s hot hatch is still awesome.

Additionally, the Type R has no fatal flaws. Yes, it sometimes feels excessively harsh, but it’s meant to be firm – that’s why it has such incredible handling and track capability, and the drive modes help finetune the overall feel.

Its interior is also fantastic, with the bucket seats being a real highlight. We’d describe it as aggressive yet mature, and we like the generous use of red trim to offset the regular Civic’s classic dash design. You also can’t ignore the satisfyingly clicky switchgear.

And while we don’t usually appraise design, we have to comment on how good the Type R looks. It’s aggressive yet refined, with enough road presence to catch your eye in traffic without screaming about it like the previous generation did.

All said, if you’re after a Type R and you’re in the position to make it happen, do it. Even if it isn’t a brand-new one, you won’t be disappointed. As mentioned, you can certainly find yourself a good deal if you look hard enough.

After all, who really knows how much longer the brilliant and already-exclusive FL5-series will be around?

CarExpert can save you thousands on a new Honda Civic.
