Australian intelligent transport systems (ITS) specialist, John Gaffney, has been inducted into the ITS World Congress Hall of Fame, recognising more than three decades of contributions to transport technology, motorway operations and industry development.<\/p>\n
The international recognition, announced in Gangneung, South Korea, on 19 October 2026, follows Mr Gaffney\u2019s receipt of the ITS Australia Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Gaffney has held senior and specialist roles with VicRoads, Victoria\u2019s Department of Transport and Planning, and Austroads, contributing to the development and operation of intelligent transport systems in Australia and internationally.<\/p>\n
One of his significant contributions was championing an integrated managed motorway approach associated with Melbourne\u2019s Monash-CityLink-West Gate upgrade. The approach brought together coordinated ramp metering, motorway design, traffic data, traveller information, real-time analytics and network operations.<\/p>\n
This helped establish a foundation for managed motorway operations in Victoria and influenced practices elsewhere in Australia and overseas.<\/p>\n
\u201cI accept this award on behalf of the Australian ITS community,\u201d Gaffney said in his acceptance speech.<\/p>\n
\u201cITS doesn\u2019t just control traffic. It profoundly contributes to a nation\u2019s productivity, safety and wellbeing. It must always remain focused on serving our community\u2019s needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
ITS Australia Chief Executive Officer, Susan Harris, said the induction recognised Gaffney\u2019s contribution to safer and more effective transport systems, as well as his work sharing expertise across the industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cJohn has dedicated his career to making transport safer, smarter and more effective, while generously sharing his knowledge with generations of ITS professionals,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n
The Hall of Fame recognition reflects the cumulative impact of Gaffney\u2019s career, including his influence on road network operations, technical guidance for motorway projects, international knowledge sharing and mentoring of ITS professionals.<\/p>\n
