It sounds great, but before anyone starts preparing the Aussie\u2019s farewell, there is something he wants cleared up.<\/p>\n
He hasn\u2019t decided which fight will be his last.<\/p>\n
Preparing to defend his featherweight crown against Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi <\/a>this weekend, Volk has explained the thinking behind a potential double retirement with lightweight champion Gaethje \u2013 one of the most violent fighters in the sport.<\/p>\n Having first floated the idea on the Who The Fook Are These Guys podcast, the Wollongong icon has now clarified that he isn\u2019t putting a deadline on his career.<\/p>\n \u201cI even mentioned being like a retirement fight, and a lot of people are acting like I meant the next fight needs to be the retirement fight. It doesn\u2019t,\u201d Volkanovski told MMA Junkie.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cBut at the same time, if that was offered to me, I go out there and do my thing and get my hand raised.\u201d<\/p>\n Alex Volkanovski and Justin GaethjeSource: FOX SPORTS<\/p>\n First comes Evloev.<\/p>\n Should Volk get through the Russian, however, he can see the appeal of a showdown with one of the most entertaining fighters the sport has ever produced.<\/p>\n Especially if \u2018The Highlight\u2019 is weighing up whether to go around again.<\/p>\n \u201cI know Gaethje doesn\u2019t really know what he wants to do,\u201d Volkanovski said.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, maybe if you do one more, I can do that with you, and then we go out there, have our superfight, and then vacate the belts after and retire.<\/p>\n \u201cThe divisions can sort themselves out while we have our little fairytale superfight ending and sail off into the sunset.\u201d<\/p>\n For Volk, the attraction goes beyond sharing a farewell with the American.<\/p>\n He believes the fight would be big enough without a championship on the line.<\/p>\n \u201cI think that would be a cool story that\u2019s never been done, and you\u2019re not holding up the divisions doing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve always said I don\u2019t want to hold up divisions.\u201d<\/p>\n The Aussie reckons his departure would also open up opportunities for the contenders chasing his crown.<\/p>\n \u201cIf I\u2019m out of the picture, then there\u2019s so many fights they can do for the belt,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m like, \u2018Maybe the UFC wouldn\u2019t mind that.\u2019<\/p>\n \u201cWe could do a superfight, then at the same time let all the other fights happen.\u201d<\/p>\n For now, it remains justan idea.<\/p>\n \u201cI just thought that would be pretty cool and could be something,\u201d Volkanovski said.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously, a lot of people jumped on it and ran with it, and now I\u2019m getting asked about it quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, footage from the final stages of Volk\u2019s UFC 333 camp has captured a wild moment during a challenge involving two of his training partners.<\/p>\n In a video posted to his YouTube channel, training partners identified as Mikey and Casey were put through a gruelling contest after the champ completed his rounds.<\/p>\n \u201cAfter I finish my rounds, the boys have a challenge,\u201d Volk explained.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery time there\u2019s new boys to fight week, we do a challenge. It\u2019s usually quite strenuous.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty crazy challenge. We get people spewing.
