The Peruvian Featherweight is unbeaten in eight professional fights, and every one of them finished in the first. The latest was a 32-second stoppage of Luca Borando on Dana White’s Contender Series. It landed him a UFC contract and a public scolding from the boss on the same night.

Long before any of that, he was a world champion in another sport entirely.

The Lowdown on El Especimen

Born and based in Lima, and known back home as “El Especimen”. A 5ft 8in Featherweight who has never been taken past the opening round as a pro. An MMA record of 8-0, with six wins by knockout or TKO and two by submission. Muay Thai world champion in 2017 and lethal with knees in the clinch. Fights out of Pitbull Martial Arts Center in Lima and signed with the UFC on 29 September 2026.

Waves, Soccer and a Thai Clinch

Escuza grew up in Lima chasing other things. Soccer came first, then surfing, before Muay Thai got hold of him young and refused to let go.

He has now spent more than a dozen years in combat sports. His most dangerous work still happens in the clinch, where Thai fighters live.

Gold in Minsk

The breakthrough came in Belarus in May 2017. Escuza travelled to the IFMA World Muay Thai Championships in Minsk as part of a Peruvian squad that also included future UFC fighter Antonina Shevchenko. Peruvian outlet Libero reported that he beat Belarusian Ramar Dounar to win world gold, with the local crowd firmly behind his opponent.

Peru took notice. The state awarded him the Gran Cruz, the highest grade of its national sporting honours, and the official citation ties it directly to that world title. He kept representing Peru in international Muay Thai through 2018.

A Gym Owner at 21

Amateur gold does not pay the bills. Escuza solved that by opening his own gym at 21 and using it to bankroll his training and the travel that international competition demands.

His fight home is Pitbull Martial Arts Center, the Lima gym built by Ivan “Pitbull” Iberico. Iberico is the coach who steered Enrique Barzola through The Ultimate Fighter Latin America and into the UFC. UFC.com’s feature on Iberico credits the gym with producing a new generation of Peruvian fighters.

Escuza is the newest export.

Nobody Sees Round Two

His MMA debut came on 13 November 2021, a rear-naked choke win over Armando Vazquez. Then nothing for 19 months. He returned in June 2023 and choked out Eyner Tarrillo with a guillotine.

Then the knockouts started.

Inka FC became his stage. Francisco da Silva, Wemerson Vitor and Joackim Pedro Neto Ferreira all went inside the first round in a six-month spell across 2023 and 2024. On 11 December 2024 he headlined Inka FC 47 against veteran Nonato Junior with the promotion’s Featherweight title on the line. He finished him with knees and punches at 3:33 of the opening frame.

Another long wait followed, 18 months this time. He ended it on 24 June 2026 by folding Octavio Lopez with a body kick 28 seconds into their fight at Inka FC 58.

Thirty-Two Seconds at the APEX

Escuza walked into the Meta APEX in Las Vegas on 29 September 2026 as a slight betting underdog against Italy’s Luca Borando, a 9-1 prospect riding five straight stoppages. Borando decided to clinch with a Muay Thai world champion. Escuza later admitted he had spent the entire camp hoping his opponent would try exactly that.

Knees against the fence hurt Borando badly, and Escuza swarmed. In the chaos, one knee landed while Borando was grounded, which is illegal under the rules. Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight at 32 seconds. Nevada commission officials reviewed the sequence and let the TKO win stand.

Dana White was not having it. Handing out contracts at the end of the night, he told Escuza he believed the fight should have been a no contest, while accepting the knee was not deliberate. Matchmaker Sean Shelby had argued hard for the Peruvian backstage, though. White followed his lead and welcomed Escuza to the UFC anyway.

Escuza only clocked the illegal strike when he watched the replay. “I come from Muay Thai, I’m a traditional fighter, I respect my opponents,” he told Cageside Press. He insisted Borando was already finished when it landed, and promised Shelby would not regret going to bat for him.

A Big Week for Peru

The contract arrived shortly after compatriot Piero Guaylupo earned his own on the Contender Series, which gave Peruvian MMA two fresh UFC signings in the space of a week. Escuza called Guaylupo’s performance a motivation and a high bar to match.

There is more than national pride riding on it. Escuza has a young son and spoke openly after the fight about the deal changing his family’s life.

In an interview with América TV, he said he feared he had thrown away a once-in-a-lifetime shot when he first saw the replay. The tears came as soon as White confirmed the deal. He has told his manager to call the moment a debut opponent is available because he wants to get the illegal knee out of his system for good. He is already planning a training trip to the United States or Thailand.

The unbeaten record brings pressure, and he does not pretend otherwise. He just refuses to fight scared of losing it. “As long as I put on a show inside the cage, I’ll leave happy with myself,” he said.

Ian Escuza MMA Record and Fighter Stats

    Name
Ian Escuza

    Nationality
Peruvian

    Weight Class
Featherweight

    Date of Birth
28 April 1996 (Age 30)

    Height
5’8″

    Pro Record
8-0. 6 wins by KO, 2 wins by submission

    UFC Record
0-0

Recent Fight Record

DateEventOpponentResultMethod

29-Sep-26Contender Series 2026Luca BorandoW1st Round TKO

24-Jun-26Inka 58Octavio LopezW1st Round TKO

11-Dec-24Inka 47Nonato JuniorW1st Round TKO

20-Jun-24Inka 43Joakim NetoW1st Round TKO

29-Feb-24Inka 40Wemerson VitorW1st Round KO

👉 Explore: Fightomic Rankings | Fightomic Featherweight Rankings

Ian Escuza has never needed a second round.
