The Cubs signed right-hander Jacob Webb to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million last December<\/a>. The contract came with a team option for 2027 for $2.5 million.<\/p>\n

Webb\u2019s overall numbers with the Cubs (68 games, 67 innings, 3.36 ERA, 1.254 WHIP, 8.8 percent walk rate, 25.7 percent K rate) were quite comparable to his three seasons prior.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the way he got to those numbers that both excited and horrified Cubs fans.<\/p>\n

Through the end of April he was pretty terrible: 13 appearances, 5.06 ERA, 6.19 FIP, 2.063 WHIP, two blown saves. Over his next 15 appearances, though, he was quite good: 0.51 ERA, 1.29 FIP, 0.792 WHIP, 22 strikeouts, four walks and no home runs in 17.2 innings. That lowered his season ERA to 2.22.<\/p>\n

Then Webb had five really bad outings in which he posted a 15.75 ERA, allowed three home runs in four innings and had two more blown saves.<\/p>\n

Just when you thought all was lost, Webb then went on his streak of 24 consecutive scoreless outings in which he had a 0.932 WHIP, 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings and had three holds and seven saves.<\/p>\n

It looked like the Cubs might actually have found a closer in the absence of Daniel Palencia.<\/p>\n

Then, as you no doubt remember, Webb blew back-to-back saves with walk-off homers served up to the Mariners and Diamondbacks, the first two of an eight-game stretch in which he posted a 14.85 ERA, 2.100 WHIP and allowed four home runs in 6.2 innings, yikes.<\/p>\n

He finished up his season after that with three scoreless outings against the Reds, Marlins and Red Sox, and then threw 1.2 scoreless frames in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Padres, long after the game was lost.<\/p>\n

So who is Jacob Webb? The guy who piles up lots of scoreless frames? Or the guy who blows save after save after save (he wound up with eight blown saves, just one fewer than the number of saves he recorded)? If Webb saves those two games in which he allowed walk-off homers, the Cubs would have hosted the Padres instead of going to San Diego. Maybe it wouldn\u2019t have mattered, but relief pitching, as you know, was a trouble spot all year.<\/p>\n

Webb is 33. When he\u2019s good he\u2019s very good. When he\u2019s bad\u2026<\/p>\n

Is that worth $2.5 million for 2027? I\u2019d say yes, presuming the Cubs get Daniel Palencia back in top form to close. Webb, I believe, can be part of a good setup staff, presuming the Cubs bolster that staff. That\u2019s not very much money.
