He was taken to hospital in a serious condition after being shot.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Stacey Maloney said the man was the partner of a woman whose family lived at the address, and there had been no previous domestic violence incidents or apprehended violence orders.

The woman was taken to hospital “in a state of shock”, Maloney said, adding police potentially saved her life. Officers arrived at the home before her partner did.

“There were police cars out the front so he would have had some idea that police were in attendance, so ultimately, the police were quite brave in confronting this individual,” Maloney said.

The man was shot once in the stomach. Officers provided first aid until paramedics took over.

Maloney said the officers involved had responded appropriately in line with their training and are being provided welfare support following the incident.

“Every day police attend domestic violence incidents like this. They are dynamic, they are unpredictable,” Maloney said.

Police tape surrounded the home on Thursday afternoon, where discarded pyjamas and a pair of slippers could be seen on the front lawn.

A critical incident has been declared, which is standard procedure for shootings involving police. The investigation will be conducted by police from a different area command, reviewed by the Professional Standards Command, and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Get alerts on breaking news as it happens.
