of the national rise in unemployment over the past year, fresh analysis has shown.

Research from National Courses using Australian Bureau of Statistics jobs data showed Australians aged between 15-24 accounted for 64 per cent of the unemployment rise.

It comes as Australia’s unemployment rate hit a <a class="body-link" October 2021.

One in four young people in the labour force are either unemployed or looking for more hours, bringing the underutilisation rate to almost 27 per cent and its highest mark since August 2021.

Despite the overrepresentation of young Australians in this data, some sectors have picked up recently.

National Courses’ director Samuel Bohr advised young people to look out for sectors with solid job prospects.

“Construction, education and training, and health care are three of the clearest growth stories in the labour market right now,” Mr Bohr said.

“Whether young Australians are heading into further study or straight into work, those are the sectors worth watching.”

Construction employment rose to about 1.4 million in the year to August while education and training added 40,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, health care and social assistance added 66,000 jobs to reach a record high.

Mr Bohr said job-finding rates had improved recently despite retail trade positions declining by almost 12,000 between April and September.

“Finishing school into a tough market doesn’t mean missing out,” Mr Bohr said.

“Job-finding rates are moving in the right direction, and young Australians can tilt the odds in their favour by training for where the growth actually is, construction, education and health care.”

It comes as the unemployment rate jumped 0.1 per cent in September.

ABS head of labour statistics Sean Crick said there were 39,000 fewer employed people and 9,000 more unemployed people in September.

“This September a higher proportion of people remained unemployed compared to recent years,” Mr Crick said.

“This follows from last month when a higher proportion of people who were previously not in the labour force moved to being unemployed.”

The ABS revealed that the number of hours worked in September lifted 0.1 per cent with part-time working hours dropping 1.5 per cent as full-time hours lifted 0.4 per cent.

Read related topics:<a
