Following a hard-fought opening round Sydney Derby, Talay is eager for his side to take another step forward, with an emphasis on showing greater confidence in possession while maintaining the competitiveness displayed against their cross-city rivals.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday\u2019s clash, the head coach reflected on the challenges of beginning the campaign with a Derby and the areas he wants to see his squad improve as the season progresses.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think getting round one out of the way was very important. Starting off with the Derby is never an easy feat,\u201d said Talay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the boys performed in a sense where they dealt with the duels and the physicality of what the Derby generally is, but they know and we know our expectation was to actually put the ball down and play some football at the same time when we had the ball at our feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey changed their game plan completely to play against us. And this week we\u2019re playing a similar team that\u2019s very direct.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheir strengths are being direct, set pieces and long balls. So it\u2019s going to be another challenge. But I think the most important thing is that we\u2019re brave when we do have the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wanderers enter the contest having secured a point in their opening round goalless draw against Sydney FC, a performance that demonstrated the defensive resilience and physical commitment Talay expects from his players.<\/p>\n

However, with the squad continuing to adapt to his philosophy, the head coach is equally focused on establishing a more expressive attacking identity that gives supporters something to get behind.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s opposition will provide another significant test for the Red & Black, with Auckland FC arriving in Western Sydney following an impressive 3-1 opening round victory over Melbourne City.<\/p>\n

Talay is well aware of the challenge posed by the visitors but believes the occasion of playing at home for the first time this season provides an opportunity for his side to make a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve had a positive start to the season and this is our first game at home and our first game in front of our fans at home,\u201d said Talay.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we want to produce a good game and a good result.\u201d<\/p>\n

One player particularly motivated for the occasion will be Liam Gillion, who joined the Wanderers during the off-season after previously representing Auckland FC.<\/p>\n

The young winger has already caught the attention of his new head coach, who believes his pace, technical ability and attacking instincts make him an exciting addition to the Red & Black.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always liked Liam. He had little moments at Auckland when he was used. Not so much last season, but the first season he was quite involved,\u201d said Talay.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s got some very good attributes. He\u2019s rapid. He\u2019s technically very good, can assist in goals and can score goals.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a young talent. And that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to be here. We\u2019re trying to give opportunities to young players, even coming through our academy at the same time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s an exciting player. They just need opportunities to play and build that momentum. And I think he\u2019ll definitely do that with the game time he\u2019s going to get.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a great occasion for him to play against his old team.\u201d<\/p>\n
