Stand on the roadside and feel the wind rise as the peloton whips past, as if it’s created its own weather system; wander just past a finish line and come within feet, maybe inches, of the pros as they search for their team bus; hang out on a mountain all day, wine and cheese in hand, with thousands of fellow cycling fans. The Tour is incredible. And for a lot of you, travelling to the 2027 Tour de France is the easiest it will ever be.

The 2027 Tour starts in Edinburgh, then heads south before hopping the Channel to Cherbourg in France. Three weeks later, the Tour de France Femmes makes a similar trajectory. This year, even more so than usual, there are plentiful options for a good Tour trip.

This is your guide to doing it right in 2027. When to go, where to watch, how to move around, what to bring, and how to make sure you actually enjoy yourself. A Tour Femmes guide is coming soon.

My name is Caley Fretz, and I’m your concierge. I’ve covered 16 Tours de France as a journalist, ridden nearly every major climb, and have a deep love for France and the French. I even lived there for a few years. You can trust me on this: the Tour will thrill you, test you, confuse you, and charm you in equal measure. There’s a difference between being a tourist and being a good tourist; I want to help you be the latter.

Let’s get to it.

When to go: How to pick your week

While there is a case to be made for the first few stages of the race held in France after the UK Grand Depart, the vast majority of holiday-goers are likely to look at one of three options: The UK, the Alps, or the Pyrenees. So which should you pick?

The UK start is going to be a party. Grand Departs are great for getting close access to riders, and the sheer volume of fans will ensure there are lots of big group rides and industry pop-ups. Yes, we’ll have events too. Ever wanted to come to a live Spin Cycle podcast? We’re planning those now.

The Alps are the more developed of the two big Tour mountain ranges. That means it’s easier to find accommodation, and it’s generally easier to get to and then get around, but costs are going to be higher across the board. Annecy is a fantastic home base to catch most of the major Alps stages this year.

The Pyrenees are bit more rugged, more rural. They offer spectacular riding and slightly smaller crowds. This year, Pau could be used as a home base for four different stages.

Below, we’ll go into detailed sample itineraries for each of these three options.

Tour de France 2027 · Spectator guide
Three ways to see the 2027 Tour

From Edinburgh to Paris, July 2–25.
