{"id":938969,"date":"2026-10-24T06:44:21","date_gmt":"2026-10-24T06:44:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/938969\/"},"modified":"2026-10-24T06:44:21","modified_gmt":"2026-10-24T06:44:21","slug":"two-large-earthquakes-off-coast-of-vanuatu-prompt-tsunami-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/938969\/","title":{"rendered":"Two large earthquakes off coast of Vanuatu prompt tsunami warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A tsunami warning has been issued after two large earthquakes struck off the coast of Vanuatu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck first about 200 kilometres west of Sola at 12:31pm AEST on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was followed shortly after by a 6.3 magnitude quake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">USGS recorded the quake at a depth of 10km.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coastlines within 300km of the epicentre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its initial threat forecast identified Vanuatu as the area potentially affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Persons located in threatened coastal areas should stay alert for information and follow instructions from national and local authorities,&#8221; the warning centre said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">No threat is currently issued for Australia, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">PTWC listed the initial magnitude of the larger quake as 7.2, but the USGS downgraded it to 6.9.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A tsunami warning has been issued after two large earthquakes struck off the coast of Vanuatu.
