As an art collector, the actor weighed in on when his hobby started and how he ended up missing out on some massive financial appreciation after selling off high-profile fine art pieces early in his career.<\/p>\n

When Sylvester Stallone bought a Monet painting and quickly resold it<\/p>\n

While talking about his art collection on \u2018The Overlap\u2019 podcast, the actor opened up about how, in the mid-1980s, he purchased Claude Monet’s famous \u2018Haystacks\u2019 (Les Meules) painting for approximately USD 110,000. During his feature on the podcast, he also admitted that he later resold the masterpiece for around USD 3 million. At the time, for him, the returns from the sale were seemingly massive. However, over the years, he has come to regret his decision. \u201cI had a collection that you can\u2019t replace because of the shift in finances,\u201d Stallone said.11 to 12 years later, the actor was approached with the opportunity to buy back another painting that he had sold off; however, this time around it was at a whopping USD 75 million for the piece. He also stated that one of the pieces of advice that he would like to give to fellow art collectors is \u201cDon\u2019t sell it unless you\u2019ve got to pay the mortgage because it\u2019s appreciating.\u201d He also added that the Monet piece also made its way back to him but with a hefty price. “There’s this one Monet; it’s called the Hackstacks. I paid up like USD 110,000. The guy wanted to sell it back to me for like USD 130 million,” he shared during the podcast.Currently, according to the singer, his collection of art is still quite extensive and expensive, including pieces by Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, alongside contemporary painters such as George Condo and Rashid Johnson. He shared that some of the art pieces in his home are now worth more than USD 40 million each. He added, “That’s my weakness. Art. I do [own] a lot more contemporary artists who are becoming the new [greats] … George Condo, Rashid Johnson\u2014they’re this generation’s Picassos.”He ended the interview by sharing that he is now looking to buy and add luxury vintage timepieces to his art collection. He added, \u201cThe vintage Rolex store by John Silver sells vintage watches; they only sell old Rolexes, and for some reason I’ve fixated on a watch called the Stella … but they’re hand-painted, and I’ve got just about the whole collection.\u201dOn the work front, Stallone is currently working on his hit series, \u2018Tulsa King.’ Beyond the hit series, Sylvester Stallone last appeared on the big screen as Joe Travers in the action-thriller \u2018Alarum\u2019, released on January 17, 2025.
