While the pair have traded horns before, those encounters either ended too soon or lacked the same intensity. This time, both riders understood the significance of beating the other and brought their A-game to the sprint. Whoever came on top was going to secure a major psychological boost in the title run-in.

Both Martin and Marquez would have considered themselves well placed heading into Saturday’s race. Martin knew he had a competitive package in the dry, while Marquez was aware that Phillip Island had traditionally suited his riding style. He also had the advantage of starting from pole position.

Yet it soon became apparent that Martin was riding on the ragged edge, while Marquez appeared to have greater control. Whenever Martin managed to get ahead, he struggled to stay there, making mistakes that allowed Marquez to strike back. The Aprilia might have had the pace to challenge, but Martin was having to ride at his limit to beat his countryman.

Marquez, known for closely analysing his rivals’ strengths and weaknesses on track, recognised that Martin was pushing the limit and knew he had to go on the attack. On lap eight, he put up a brilliant fight against the Aprilia rider, holding steadfast until Martin made a costly mistake at Turn 8. The crash was devastating for Martin, particularly due to the fracture he sustained after hitting the ground. But even without the injury, the result would have left Martin facing difficult questions about his ability to keep Marquez at bay in the title fight.

The Phillip Island weekend highlighted a pattern that has become impossible to overlook. Marquez has capitalised on every single opportunity to maximise his points score, while the two factory Aprilia riders have repeatedly surrendered valuable ground. It’s not that Aprilia has been quicker than Ducati at every track. On the contrary, Ducati had a performance advantage at more venues than the public perception might suggest. But for Marquez to have a 10-point lead after missing two rounds and struggling for performance before his mid-surgery, says as much about his brilliance as it does about Martin and Marco Bezzecchi’s shortcomings.

Aprilia riders have hemorrhaged too many points in 2026, whether due to their own mistakes or sheer bad luck

Photo by: Gold and Goose Photography / LAT Images / via Getty Images

Make no mistake, there have been some instances where Aprilia lost ground due to circumstances beyond the team’s or its riders’ control. Martin’s arm pump issue in Misano springs to mind; not only did he lose a chance to duel with Marquez, it also cost him 14 points relative to his rival in the championship. Likewise, mid-weekend rain at Phillip Island left Marco Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura well down the grid, leaving Marquez with fewer Aprilias to contend with had it stayed dry throughout.

However, even after taking those events into consideration, the warning signs had been there for some time. Marquez had been making significant inroads into the championship lead, with mistakes and missed opportunities from Aprilia’s riders repeatedly helping him along the way.

Rather than building on their advantage, Martin and Bezzecchi have often found themselves trying to undo the damage. The Indonesian GP weekend illustrated this perfectly. After Martin lost the sprint lead due to a combination of tyre pressure issues and his own late mistake, Marquez snatched a shock win at one of his and Ducati’s weakest tracks. The following day, even a 1-2-3-4 finish for Aprilia only restored Martin to the same position he had occupied before the weekend, with a narrow two-point lead in the standings.

With Marquez rarely running wide, let alone crashing, the rest of the 2026 grid has struggled to match his level of performance and consistency

As a result, Martin was effectively clinging to the championship lead by a thread. One major mistake or another case of bad luck was going to allow Marquez to pull away substantially. Bezzecchi, meanwhile, had already suffered a similar setback at Misano, crashing out while trailing the championship leaders by 22 points. Martin may have been in a different position in the title standings, but at this stage of the season, the impact of every mistake is amplified.

In another season, these errors may have mattered less. Martin, of course, won his MotoGP title in a year that was branded the ‘championship of mistakes’. But with Marquez now on a competitive bike and rarely running wide on track – let alone crashing – the rest of the 2026 grid has struggled to match his level of performance and consistency.

So where does the Australian GP leave Aprilia and Martin in the title fight? Firstly, Martin and Aprilia were handed a huge lifeline on Sunday when the full-distance race was cancelled. If the race had gone ahead, Marquez would have enjoyed a major opportunity to pull away further in the standings, with Martin declared unfit to participate. Even if Marquez had looked at the bigger picture and played it safe, he could have walked away with a 30-point lead in the standings. That would have almost certainly been game over for Martin.

Read Also:

Even with a 10-point deficit, however, recovering the lost ground will not be easy, particularly given Martin’s physical condition. The Spaniard is working closely with his physiotherapist to prepare for a potential comeback at Sepang this week. He must still pass medical tests at the track on Thursday before being allowed to take part in FP1. Even if he is cleared to race, he is unlikely to be fully fit, judging by Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola’s comments on Sunday.

The Qatar Grand Prix could then prove decisive. Although Losail should suit Aprilia, Martin might actually benefit from the race being cancelled, giving him more time to recover. Completing a triple-header in his current condition would be an enormous challenge otherwise.

Ultimately, Martin’s immediate priority must be to minimise his points loss in Malaysia (and Qatar) and use the subsequent break to prepare for a late-season fightback. The Portimao/Valencia double header will offer 74 points in total, and if all four Aprilia riders can act in unison and take points away from Marquez, Martin could still retain a theoretical chance of winning the title. But with his fitness in doubt and Marquez showing no signs of weakness, the odds are firmly against him.

Jorge Martin’s title hopes are hanging by a thread after he fractured his arm in Australia

Photo by: Gold and Goose Photography / Getty Images

If Martin is ruled out of Malaysia, Aprilia would have to turn to Bezzecchi, who trails Marquez by 50 points with four rounds remaining. The Italian would need to rediscover his early-season form to have any chance of bridging that gap. His recent win in Indonesia and Aprilia’s late-season run in 2025 might help him draw some encouragement.

But sprint races remain a weakness for Bezzecchi, and no rider can win a title without being competitive on Saturday. While Marquez has won nine half-distance races this year, Bezzecchi has yet to open his tally this year. Even if Bezzecchi were to win all four grands prix – as Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi suggested as a possibility – Marquez might be able to offset those gains on Saturdays.

At some point, Aprilia may have to concede that its chances of winning the riders’ title are slim and shift its focus towards the manufacturers’ championship, where it still leads Ducati by six points.

Rivola is a racer at heart and giving up the riders’ title would not come easily. But ultimately, he is answerable to the board of the Piaggio Group, which has invested tens of millions into the project to help transform the RS-GP from a perennial backmarker to a title contender in five years. The top brass at Piaggio would very much bask in the glory if Aprilia’s racing arm clinches the manufacturers’ championship, even if the riders’ title slips away.

While Aprilia can still hope for a late twist in the riders’ championship, a teams’ and constructors’ double would still give the team plenty of reasons to celebrate at the end of MotoGP’s 1000cc era.

Even if Aprilia’s chances of winning the riders’ title appear slim, it could still beat Ducati in the manufacturers’ fight

We want to hear from you!

Let us know what you would like to see from us in the future.

            Take our survey

– The Autosport.com Team

MotoGP’s final visit to Phillip Island was cut short by poor weather, but even half a weekend of…

[572
64,63,27784,509776,5744,4280,5745,806,805,803,804,126450,85
post-942864","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-motosport","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australian-gp","tag-is-motogpu2019s-title-fight-over-after-the-australian-gp-swing","tag-jorge-martin","tag-marc-marquez","tag-motogp","tag-motor","tag-motor-sports","tag-motosport","tag-motosports","tag-phillip-island-grand-prix-circuit","tag-sports
["GET
