SALISBURY — Salisbury tennis players gathered around coach Teen Aron for the final time this season for last shout of “1-2-3, Hornets!”

Salisbury ended the season on Monday at home in the fourth round of the 4A state playoffs. Fourth-seeded Brevard (14-3) is good — two losses were to 5A power West Henderson — and beat the Hornets 5-0.

Brevard won on courts 1,2, 5 and 6 in straight sets to take a 4-0 lead.

When Charlotte Barlow won a roller-coaster, third-set tiebreaker, 11-9, against Campbell Aron at 4 singles, it was all over. Aron had a vocal cheering section that applauded each point, but it wasn’t quite enough. The Hornets couldn’t send the match to doubles.

Salisbury assistant coach Bryan Wymbs headed onto court No. 3 to break the news to freshman Jillian Jarrell. He patted her on the back and told her that her fierce match wouldn’t be completed.

“Not our day, Brevard was very strong, but what a wonderful season it was,” Coach Aron said. “We were able to honor the Leonard family for their support. We won another conference championship. We had girls qualify for the state individual tournament. We made the fourth round of the playoffs. We had four all-conference players.”

The biggest thing was continuing the program’s long streak of consecutive conference championships that dates back to 2003. To do that, the Hornets had to beat Carson, West Rowan and Northwest Cabarrus, all good teams, twice each.

The Hornets did it with a roster of six and with no seniors. Their leaders were juniors Gabbi Fatovic and Anna Kate Goodman, who played 1 and 2 singles and 1 doubles. Aron and Jarrell were just about unbeatable on the middle courts and 2 doubles all season.

Salisbury (18-3) earned a No. 1 seed for the 4A West Region playoffs, although Brevard (14-3) proved to be stronger at the top and bottom. Brevard advanced to take on Lake Norman Charter on Thursday in the regional final. Lake Norman Charter was state runner-up in 2025. Carrboro, the defending state champ, is taking on Ledford in the 4A East Region final.

“We’ll definitely be back, stronger than ever in 2027,” Coach Aron said. “Community support here is still very special, and seeing all those people out here today, lots of parents of former players, brought me more joy than any win we had.”

High school girls tennis: Hornets end season Published 10:08 pm Tuesday, October 27, 2026 SALISBURY — Salisbury tennis…

[565
64,63,85,747
post-943416","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
