The trial \u2014 first announced in March 2026 as part of the government\u2019s broader women\u2019s health package \u2014 aims to relieve mounting pressure on overcrowded GP clinics while slashing out-of-pocket costs for everyday medical necessities.<\/p>\n
Access to contraception without a doctor\u2019s appointment will remain subject to state and territory regulations. <\/p>\n
Several jurisdictions have already paved the way. NSW made pharmacy-led UTI treatment permanent in 2024, while Victoria allows trained pharmacists to assess and resupply certain hormonal contraceptives.<\/p>\n
Community pharmacists have backed the announcement, saying the initiative gives women fast, accessible care when they need it most.<\/p>\n
