Image: XPB Images

Formula 1 heads to Mexico City this weekend with Kimi Antonelli on the verge of becoming the youngest world champion in the sport’s history.

The 4.304km Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will host the 71-lap race, with its long main straight, heavy braking into Turn 1 and tight stadium section providing a distinctive challenge.

Situated more than 2200 metres above sea level, the circuit’s thin air also reduces aerodynamic downforce and cooling efficiency, adding another complication for teams and drivers.

This weekend marks the 26th running of a Formula 1 World Championship race in Mexico and the sixth under the Mexico City Grand Prix name, having previously been known as the Mexican Grand Prix.

The first championship event took place in 1963, a year after a non-championship race at the venue, while the grand prix returned to the calendar in 2015 following a 23-year absence.

Since that return, Max Verstappen has dominated the event, winning five of the 10 races held and setting the record for most World Championship victories in Mexico.

Those five wins have also made Red Bull the most successful constructor at the event, ahead of McLaren on four, including New Zealander Denny Hulme’s triumph in 1969.

Lewis Hamilton is the only other driver on the current grid to have won in Mexico more than once, taking victory for Mercedes in 2016 and 2019.

The last three editions, however, have produced three different winners for three teams, with Verstappen successful in 2023 before Carlos Sainz won for Ferrari in 2024 and Lando Norris took victory for McLaren last year.

While those drivers will be eyeing another victory, much of the attention will be on Antonelli as he gets his second opportunity to secure his maiden world championship.

The Mercedes driver came agonisingly close in Austin, where his ninth victory of the season extended his lead over teammate George Russell to 123 points with five races remaining.

Hamilton also remains mathematically in contention, sitting a further point behind Russell, but Antonelli now needs just a ninth-place finish in Mexico to secure the crown regardless of his rivals’ results.

That would make the 20-year-old the youngest champion in Formula 1 history and the first Italian to win the drivers’ title since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

How Kimi Antonelli can win the F1 title in Mexico City

Even a finish outside the points could be enough if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the race. Should Antonelli finish 10th, only a Russell victory could keep the championship alive for another round.

For Oscar Piastri, the weekend brings a very different milestone to avoid after another difficult race in Austin left him without a podium for 14 consecutive grands prix.

It is his longest such run since his first 15 races in Formula 1 in 2023, meaning another finish outside the top three would equal that stretch and underline McLaren’s struggles this season.

There will also be a special occasion for home favourite Sergio Perez, who returns to race in Mexico for the first time since 2024, now representing Cadillac.

The Mexican is set to make his 300th grand prix start, becoming just the seventh driver to reach that milestone and the first to achieve it at his home race.

With Antonelli poised to make championship history, Piastri hoping to end his podium drought and Perez celebrating a landmark appearance in front of his home crowd, Mexico City is set for a significant weekend on several fronts.

When is the Mexico CIty Grand Prix?

The Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez takes place on October 31-November 2 (AEDT).

What time does the Mexico City Grand Prix start?

The Mexico City Grand Prix will start at 7am AEDT on Monday, November 2.
