Kurtley Beale is suddenly in line to become the third-oldest Wallabies player since World War II after his shock recall from the Test wilderness on Wednesday.

Bizarrely, Beale does not even have a full Super Rugby contract for next year, instead re-signing with the Western Force on a ‘train-and-trial’ deal that will require an injury to allow him to actually take the park.

But Wallabies coach Les Kiss turned to the 37-year-old after Japan-bound Hunter Paisami made himself unavailable for the four Nations Championship Tests in the United Kingdom in November.

Beale, perhaps the most hyped schoolboys prospect in Australian rugby history, was destined to become a Wallabies star at a young age and made his Test debut as a 20-year-old against Wales in 2009.

He has survived the Di Patston texting scandal, a rape charge – which he was acquitted of – after a night out in a Bondi pub, and a ruptured Achilles tendon to add an unlikely chapter to his 95-Test career.

Beale’s last Test was against Wales in 2021.

The versatile playmaker was picked in Joe Schmidt’s first Wallabies squad in 2024 before he ruptured his Achilles playing for Randwick.

“A little bit of surprise,” Morgan Turinui told nine.com.au after Beale’s Test recall.

“But it gives them something different, which I like. If something happens with Carter Gordon over there, you’ve got another No.10. You’ve got something different at 12 if needed, he can play in the back three, and you also get the IP (intellectual property) around the group in helping prepare other guys as well.

“So when you look at it that way, it’s actually a really logical decision.“

Beale is one of three veteran playmakers hoping to defy Father Time and represent Australia at another Rugby World Cup next year.

He will reunite with James O’Connor, 36, at the Force while Bernard Foley, 37, is also gunning for a fairytale Wallabies ending via the NSW Waratahs.

“It’s got to be useful to get one of those guys into a touring squad, especially with some of those young playmakers developing,” ex-Wallabies centre Turinui said.

“The top two inches are still quick, that’s important. Kurtley looks like he’s matured and looked after his body a bit more – it seems from the outside. I don’t think speed will be the issue.

“It’s the high contact areas that will be hard at 37. But he’s been doing this his whole life, since he came in as a school kid. You don’t just pick a guy to go along and advise. Kurtley’s not going as a coach, he’s going as a genuine option.”

Isaac Henry and Len Ikitau appeal as the likely midfield starters in the first Test against England at Twickenham on November 9 (AEDT).

But Stan Sport pundit Turinui says Beale would be a useful bench consideration.

“The last 20 minutes, an extra ballplayer on the field when it opens up a little bit, with a bit more fatigue in the game,” he said.

Ewen McKenzie – who coached Beale – has long argued that the Wallabies need a second ballplayer at inside centre.

“If you have him in a midfield, it gives the Wallabies a bit more width, a bit more threat,” Turinui said.

“We’ve seen them able to unpick sides when their back three works really hard, in the wider 15-metre channels. It would allow (fullback) Tom Wright to be more of a strike player, and less of having to be an extra ballplayer.”

Kadin Pritchard and Zac Lomax will start in the centres for Australia A against the United States in New Jersey on Saturday (AEDT).

“It’s not like someone’s been brushed or dropped, or it’s controversial,” Turinui said of the Beale recall.

“It’s not a shock horror selection.”

But is it an indictment of Australia’s development system?

“There’s an element of that,” Turinui said.

“But if you’ve still got it, Test rugby is not a kid’s game. Kurtley is an exception to the rule.”
