A generous portion of corporate word salad, but lacking in substantive detail.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>It soon became clear that one of the new partnership\u2019s priorities was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/explained-how-the-haas-toyota-f1-alliance-is-actually-going-to-work\/10662112\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to develop a new driver-in-loop simulator<\/a>, a critical piece of infrastructure Haas currently lacks. Not only do these enable competitors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/video\/what-are-f1-simulation-tools-and-how-do-teams-use-them\/506933\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to arrive at a baseline mechanical setup before arriving at a track<\/a>, they can also be used to evaluate alternatives while a race weekend is in progress.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>And as F1 gears up to a new ruleset in 2026 featuring active aerodynamics, narrower cars and greater electrical power deployment from the powertrain, the simulator will become an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/f1-2026-cars-must-be-made-easier-for-drivers-vowles\/10749963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">essential driver coaching tool<\/a>.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cIt [power unit management] is so interlinked, much more so than up until now,\u201d Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu told select media including Motorsport.com<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cDriver operation has much bigger consequences, good and bad, because of the limitation on energy recovery and deployment. So it is very, very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/ayao-komatsu-haas-f1-team.jpg\" alt=\"Ayao Komatsu, Haas F1 Team\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Ayao Komatsu, Haas F1 Team<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Peter Fox \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The problem for Haas is that it is still reliant on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/haas-to-stick-with-ferrari-in-f1-through-to-2028-toyota-talks-ongoing\/10635231\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">using Ferrari\u2019s simulator<\/a> while its new one comes together in its Banbury HQ. This is sub-optimal for many reasons, and not just because of the cost implications of additional travel in the budget-cap era.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>It is limited for time in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/ferrari\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ferrari<\/a> simulator, and the process requires input from the team\u2019s trackside engineering personnel, which involves more time away from home for people who already attend up to 24 races a year.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Toyota has a simulator in its Cologne facility but using this would involve the same practical challenges. What Haas gains from working with Toyota is fast-tracking the building and commissioning process: a simulator has specific architectural and power requirements in terms of the building that accommodates it, the hardware itself is very specialised, and achieving correlation between simulation and real-world performance is both challenging and time-consuming &#8211; hence Komatsu\u2019s description of the sim as \u201cdefinitely one of the top-priority items we [Haas and Toyota] are working on\u201d.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Earlier this year, new Aston Martin \u2018managing technical partner\u2019 Adrian Newey said openly that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/newey-provoking-aston-martin-key-areas\/10730239\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">his team\u2019s new simulator was \u201cweak\u201d and \u201cnot correlating at the moment\u201d<\/a>. This summer he hired his former Red Bull colleague Giles Wood to take charge of simulation and modelling.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cDefinitely, we are behind,\u201d said Komatsu, \u201cbut we&#8217;re not blind to it. <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cOf course, we\u2019re trying to put it in place. So the simulator is coming, but it&#8217;s not there yet. <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cIn terms of next year&#8217;s preparation, definitely that&#8217;s a disadvantage for us, but that&#8217;s the reality. We\u2019re trying to move as quickly as possible to put that in place, but we&#8217;re not there yet. So while the benefits will play out in the long term, Haas will have to gear up for 2026 with its present arrangements.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cIn terms of 2026 preparation, we are very much still on what we&#8217;ve got now, with us using a Ferrari simulator,\u201d said Komatsu. <br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThat&#8217;s a limitation for sure. I&#8217;m not saying anything bad against Ferrari simulator, but just in terms of location, access, amount of hours we can do, cost effectiveness, etc. Cost, if you have it in-house, it&#8217;s much better.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThis PU [power unit] is a huge challenge in terms of energy recovery, deployment. That means a driver is completely in that loop.
