New York Post<\/a>\u00a0she was the co-pilot flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. <\/p>\nThe family said she had been working as a commercial pilot for nine months and had 1300 hours of flying experience.<\/p>\n
Plane was breaking apart<\/p>\n
On Monday, the US\u2019 National Safety Transportation Board (NTSB) said their initial indications were that a part of the plane began breaking off midair.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do have some indication that the aircraft was breaking up before impact,\u201d said the NTSB\u2019s Tom Chapman said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe may find parts of the aircraft some distance away from the actual impact site.\u201d<\/p>\n
If a key part of the aircraft was lost, such as the tail, it would have made controlling the aircraft almost impossible.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s thought the jet flew through a storm while over Florida. The role of the weather and any ice build up on the plane \u2013 which can affect the aerodynamics \u2013 are set to be at the heart of the investigation.<\/p>\n
The pilots began to report issues when the plane was at 35,000 feet with turbulence and ice accumulating on the wings, according to an air traffic control audio recording. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence,\u201d a pilot said. <\/p>\n
But the situation then began to deteriorate. <\/p>\n
The pilot requested the plane head higher by 2000 feet \u2013 but it soon began heading in the opposite direction. <\/p>\n
Ms Filgueiras\u2019 repeatedly declared \u201cmayday\u201d, an international voice radio distress signal used by pilots, when it became clear the aircraft was rapidly losing elevation. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re descending 8000 feet, mayday, mayday, 10,000 feet per minute,\u201d she can be heard screaming into an air traffic controller. <\/p>\n
\u201cDeclaring emergency \u2026 descending 20,000 feet per minute \u2026 we\u2019re going to crash into the ground.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are banking 60 degrees, we are going to die, holy f**k we\u2019re out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Gregory, the pilot of the jet, can be heard reciting the Lord\u2019s prayers in the background as the plane plummeted. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s not clear whether Ms Filgueiras was chiefly in charge of the aircraft during the flight. <\/p>\n
\u2018Knew her dream would take her from me\u2019<\/p>\n
Camila Filgueiras said she wanted her daughter \u201cto live her dream\u201d when she told her she wanted to fly. <\/p>\n
\u201cBut I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,\u201d she told the Post from her home in Palm Beach County.<\/p>\n
\u201cI knew that a plane was gonna take her away from me. I always knew it but I was so proud of her. I know she was living her dream,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody was so impressed with her. They hired her because they knew how good she was and how much she loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The 20-year-old regularly documented her aviation journey on social media, sharing photos and videos from her flights. <\/p>\n
In one clip, Ms. Filgueiras captioned the footage: \u201cHow often do you see two pilots under 21 with a commercial, multi-engine, instrument rating, CFI\/CFI-I?\u201d<\/p>\n
She had even described herself as having a \u201cplane addiction\u201d in one of her posts.<\/p>\n

The young aviator had also been featured in local media when she got her private pilot\u2019s licence at just 17 in October 2023, before she even had her driver\u2019s licence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI definitely do brag because people say, \u2018Oh, you can\u2019t drive\u2019, and I\u2019m like, \u2018Yeah, but I can fly\u2019,\u201d she told US network CBS12 in an interview at the time.<\/p>\n
Ms Filgueiras explained that she began pilot lessons in 2020, but was also taught by her dad.<\/p>\n
She said she had flown every day since ground school, building 88 hours of flight time and passing the knowledge test.<\/p>\n
She achieved her licence in 2023, which was paid for by the School District of Palm Beach County\u2019s Aviation Academy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI like being different than everyone,\u201d Ms Filgueiras said.<\/p>\n

The crash site was relatively close to US President Donald Trump\u2019s resort home of Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n
