A man accused of holding a woman captive at gunpoint in Far North Queensland is facing a staggering 20 criminal charges following his arrest.<\/p>\n
Ryan Symonds, 34, was taken into custody at Miallo on Monday after a woman allegedly escaped from his grasps on Saturday and flagged down a police officer.<\/p>\n
It is alleged that he assaulted the woman, who was known to him, on a number of occasions before she escaped and alerted the police.<\/p>\n
Police said they seized a firearm at the time of the arrest.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, police confirmed that Mr Symonds has since been charged with 20 offences related to the woman\u2019s allegations.<\/p>\n
These include two counts each of deprivation of liberty and strangulation in a domestic relationship and dangerous conduct with a weapon as a DV offence.<\/p>\n
Police allege that on October 26, Mr Symonds attended a home in Feluga and threatened a woman with a firearm and assaulted her.<\/p>\n
It will then be alleged he forced the woman into a car and took her to a property in Tully.<\/p>\n
On October 30, he then allegedly found the woman at another property in Aloomba, before again forcing her into a vehicle.<\/p>\n
The following day, she was able to escape and flag down a police, sparking a manhunt for Mr Symonds.<\/p>\n
He was then arrested about 4pm on Monday, November 2.<\/p>\n
Far Northern Region Detective Inspector Kevin Goan, speaking before the arrest, described the woman\u2019s ordeal as \u201ca harrowing experience \u2026 over a number of days\u201d.<\/p>\n
Police alleged the woman escaped on Saturday morning at Mount Molloy, about 90 minutes northwest of Cairns, when she flagged down an officer in a marked police car.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very grateful that she is safe and assisting us with our investigations,\u201d Inspector Goan said.<\/p>\n
Authorities also indicated the woman was being supported with help from other agencies.<\/p>\n
The search for Symonds stretched across several parts of Far North Queensland, with police earlier believing he had moved through areas including the Northern Beaches, the Tablelands and the Cassowary Coast.<\/p>\n
Before his arrest, investigators also believed he was travelling near Oak Beach with his dog, a brown Kelpie cross, in a stolen black-grey Toyota Land Cruiser ute.<\/p>\n
Inspector Goan warned that Mr Symonds appeared determined to avoid police detection and posed a danger on the road.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has been motivated to avoid police detection,\u201d Inspector Goan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s demonstrated a willingness to drive at speed and in doing so, he presents a risk to our community by putting other motorists at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police also believed he had strong bush skills, which added to the challenge of tracking him through remote country.<\/p>\n
