Vasconcelos

Date posted: 3 November 2026

Jack Doohan could make a surprise Formula 1 return at this weekend’s São Paulo Grand Prix, with Haas considering the Australian as a potential replacement for Esteban Ocon for the final four races of 2026.

By Luis Vasconcelos

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu faces a difficult decision over who will partner Oliver Bearman at Interlagos, with an announcement expected by Thursday morning, Brazilian time.

Doohan is believed to be among the leading candidates, alongside Toyota-backed Ryo Hirakawa and Ferrari junior Rafael Câmara, while the possibility of Ocon returning has not been completely ruled out.

Hirakawa’s impressive 10th-place finish on his Grand Prix debut in Mexico, following post-race penalties, has complicated matters for Komatsu, rewarding Toyota’s investment in its partnership with Haas.

However, Hirakawa’s World Endurance Championship commitments could open the door for Doohan to return to the Formula 1 grid.

Ocon’s Haas future in doubt

Ocon’s position at Haas remains unresolved following an apparent breakdown in his relationship with the team during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.

The Frenchman vacated his seat following Friday practice, with Hirakawa stepping in and ultimately securing a points finish.

The matter is understood to be in the hands of Haas’ legal team, with a mutually agreed contract termination considered a possible outcome.

Komatsu needs a resolution quickly, with just days remaining before the São Paulo Grand Prix.

A return for Ocon appears unlikely, leaving three other contenders for the vacant seat.

Hirakawa faces championship dilemma

Hirakawa would be a logical choice after his performance in Mexico, but the Toyota driver faces a significant conflict with the final round of the World Endurance Championship at Monza.

With the Qatar and Bahrain rounds cancelled, Monza will decide the championship.

Hirakawa and teammates Sébastien Buemi and Brendon Hartley lead the standings by 17 points over Toyota’s other crew, with third place sufficient to secure the title.

However, should Hirakawa miss the race, he would lose his chance of claiming the drivers’ championship if his teammates score even a single point.

Toyota and Hirakawa must therefore decide whether an immediate Formula 1 opportunity outweighs the prospect of securing another endurance racing world title.

That decision could prove crucial to Doohan’s chances.

Doohan ready for Formula 1 comeback

As Haas’ reserve driver, Doohan is available to step into the VF-26 for the remaining four Grands Prix.

The Australian is understood to have impressed the team during his testing of previous cars (TPC) programme and offers more Formula 1 race experience than Hirakawa.

His familiarity with Haas machinery could also count in his favour, particularly given the limited preparation time available before Brazil.

One disadvantage is his lack of experience at Interlagos, where Hirakawa has previously competed in World Endurance Championship events.

Nevertheless, Doohan represents an immediately available option for Komatsu, without the championship complications facing the Japanese driver.

A promotion would give the Australian an unexpected opportunity to re-establish himself on the Formula 1 grid before the end of the season.

Câmara faces F2 title decision

Haas’ 2027 signing Rafael Câmara is the other serious candidate, although his promotion would create another championship dilemma.

The Brazilian is scheduled to make his Formula 1 practice debut on Friday, driving Ferrari’s SF-26 in FP1 at Interlagos.

However, he could instead find himself making his Grand Prix debut for Haas on home soil.

Câmara currently leads the Formula 2 championship by seven points over Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov, with Alex Dunne a further 11 points behind.

With two rounds remaining, moving into Formula 1 would almost certainly end Câmara’s F2 title hopes.

Ferrari will have a significant say in the decision.

While the Italian manufacturer may see an early Formula 1 debut as valuable preparation for Câmara’s first full season in 2027, it may also consider the pressure of debuting at his home Grand Prix unnecessary.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur was unwilling to speculate following the Mexican Grand Prix.

“We haven’t had any contact from Haas,” Vasseur said.

“Ayao will take his own decision. He’s a very good Team Principal, he will do the job and we will be supportive in any kind of decision from their side.”

The Frenchman then joked: “I have enough to do with my two drivers…”

For Komatsu, the decision is considerably more urgent.

With Hirakawa chasing a world championship, Câmara fighting for the Formula 2 crown and Ocon’s future uncertain, Doohan could find himself in the right place at the right time.

Recent Storiesarray (
0 =>
WP_Term::__set_state(array(
‘term_id’ => 37,
‘name’ => ‘F1’,
‘slug’ => ‘f1’,
‘term_group’ => 0,
‘term_taxonomy_id’ => 37,
‘taxonomy’ => ‘category’,
‘description’ => ‘An Introduction to Formula One (F1)
Formula One, or F1, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing, governed by the Fédération Internationale de l\\’Automobile (FIA) and is owned by Liberty Media.
