Two Australians were killed in the devastating train disaster that killed 69 people in central Spain last week, authorities have confirmed.<\/p>\n
The accident happened when one high speed train smashed into the rear of another sending carriages off the track and injuring almost 200 people.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Castilla-La Mancha confirmed it has formally identified all victims.<\/p>\n
They included 54 Spanish citizens, and 15 foreigners, including two Australians, four Americans and a Canadian. <\/p>\n
On Monday, Cambridge University professor Dr Marta Shahbazi, a 41-year-old mother, was also confirmed as being one of the victims.<\/p>\n
Spain\u2019s transport minister said the country would work \u201ctirelessly\u201d to restore public confidence in high-speed train travel.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe pledge to work tirelessly to achieve and regain the public\u2019s trust in high-speed rail,\u201d Oscar Puente told journalists.<\/p>\n
He also announced an aid package of 30 million euros ($48 million) for the families of the dead and those who were injured in the tragedy.<\/p>\n
Last week\u2019s disaster was the second deadly rail accident this year.<\/p>\n
In January, 46 people were killed after a train jumped the track and slammed into the side of a train going the other way.<\/p>\n
Both accidents took place on the same rail line between Madrid and Seville and both involved a train operated by state-owned rail operator Renfe and a train owned by private firm Iryo.<\/p>\n
On Friday, DFAT said it was providing consular assistance to the family of two Australians in connection with the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralian officials are working with local authorities to confirm the welfare of the Australians. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Mr Puente said the Renfe train received an \u201cinexplicable\u201d command to start moving again after a systems failure. The Iryo train was unable to restart after the failure and remained stationary.<\/p>\n
