Untelevised team radio from the Mexican Grand Prix has revealed the moment Lewis Hamilton<\/a> admitted he had no hope of passing Max Verstappen and the Red Bull<\/a> Powertrains engine.<\/p>\n

It comes after Hamilton quipped that Verstappen and Red Bull have \u201ctoo much power on the straights\u201d in the post-race cooldown room, with the Ferrari driver calling for the FIA to address the problem of cars clipping at the end of straights to improve overtaking.<\/p>\n

Verstappen claimed his third victory in four races in Mexico last weekend, seizing the lead after a heated clash between Hamilton and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.<\/p>\n

Leclerc was handed a five-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage in battle with Hamilton, who lost a further place to Verstappen in the incident.<\/p>\n

Verstappen held off the advances of Hamilton following a late red flag to cross the finish line 0.799 seconds ahead of the Ferrari.<\/p>\n

Untelevised footage from the Mexican Grand Prix has uncovered the moment Hamilton conceded that he had no chance of passing Verstappen due to the superiority of the RBPT engine.<\/p>\n

Hamilton was told by his race engineer, Carlo Santi, on Lap 64 of 71 that he had both overtake mode and boost available to make a move on Verstappen.<\/p>\n

However, Hamilton sounded resigned to defeat as he followed the RB22.<\/p>\n

The full exchange, which cannot be reproduced here due to broadcast rights restrictions, went as follows:<\/p>\n

Santi: \u201cYou have overtake and boost on the main straight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cHow am I supposed to overtake the Red Bull engine?\u201d<\/p>\n

The emergence of Hamilton\u2019s radio message comes after he light-heartedly told Verstappen in the cooldown room ahead of the podium ceremony that Red Bull has too much power.<\/p>\n

Verstappen responded by quipping that he needs so much power to counteract the Ferrari\u2019s superior speed in the corners.<\/p>\n

The full exchange went as follows:<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cYou guys have just got too much power on the straights as well. Frickin\u2019 heck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verstappen: \u201cI mean, I needed it with your cornering!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton and Verstappen both highlighted clipping \u2013 the phenomenon that sees cars harvest energy and lose power on the straights \u2013 as an issue behind a lack of overtaking in Mexico, denying the drivers the chance to make a move.<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cIt\u2019s so stupid, the clipping they have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verstappen: \u201cYeah, that\u2019s true. It really kills the overtaking into Turn 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hamilton: \u201cI don\u2019t understand why they\u2026 it\u2019s like they\u2019ve got no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Appearing in the post-race press conference, Hamilton called for the FIA to address \u201cthese silly clips\u201d as well as suggesting a change to the final corner in Mexico to improve overtaking on the long straight towards Turn 1.<\/p>\n

Hamilton said: \u201cWe had let Max past and the race was done from there. You can\u2019t overtake here.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s something the FIA need to do and it\u2019s just quite bad. I\u2019m sure these guys [Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli] would agree.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have this clip at the end of the straight where you can\u2019t go past a certain speed, so everyone just follows.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the silliest thing when you are behind and you have a little bit more power in the slipstream.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should be able to go past that to have a chance to overtake. The engine can go faster. It\u2019s just they have these silly clips.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the worst engine profile setting that I think they\u2019ve probably ever had in this sport and it doesn\u2019t provide great racing, so today you probably didn\u2019t see much overtaking, unfortunately, because of that.<\/p>\n

\u201cObviously, the starts were fun, but it\u2019s a very hard track to follow with the thin air and low downforce.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave it everything to try and get close to Max, but maybe they needed\u2026 I don\u2019t know if they need to change the last corner because it\u2019s so quick. I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere could be a change to the track, maybe, to enable us to have a little bit better racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut everyone having this [clipping] this year just diminishes any opportunity of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
