A new photography exhibition in Newcastle is shining a light on the people behind some of Australia’s most interesting historical images, with Focus: Australian government photographers opening at Newcastle Museum on 12 November.<\/p>\n

Between 1939 and 1996, dozens of photographers were employed by Australian government agencies to document the country’s people, culture, landscapes and wildlife. Their work helped preserve an important visual record of Australia across six decades, although much of it has remained relatively unknown.<\/p>\n

The touring exhibition draws on the National Archives of Australia’s collection of almost 11 million images, bringing together photographs that showcase both the diversity of Australian life and the talent of the people behind the cameras.<\/p>\n

Among those featured are Harry Frauca, Jocelyn Burt and Mervyn Bishop<\/a>. The collection includes everything from intimate wildlife and nature photography to striking architectural images and snapshots of everyday life.<\/p>\n

Curator Emily Catt says the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to discover the breadth of work produced by government photographers, including Tim Acker’s aerial landscape photography and Harry Frauca’s intimate studies of native Australian animals.<\/p>\n

National Archives Director-General Simon Froude says the exhibition challenges the perception that government photography was largely limited to promotional images.<\/p>\n

The photographs demonstrate considerable artistry and talent, he says, and deserve recognition beyond their original bureaucratic purpose.<\/p>\n

For photography enthusiasts, Focus offers an interesting look at a part of Australia’s photographic history that might otherwise go unnoticed, while highlighting the role images play in documenting culture, shaping perceptions and preserving memories.<\/p>\n

Focus: Australian government photographers <\/a>runs from 12 November 2026 to 7 February 2027 at Newcastle Museum, 6 Workshop Way, Newcastle NSW.<\/p>\n
