But police believe Rodney Alcala may have killed dozens more, having left behind a chilling collection of photographs that could hold the key to his true victim count.

Alcala appeared on national television in the 1970s as a contestant on a TV dating show called The Dating Game and worked as a photographer. Few who encountered him would have suspected he was a notorious serial killer.

Luring young women and girls with his charisma, and often sporting a camera around his neck, he was known to offer his victims lifts in his car or promise to take professional photographs of them. Once he had them alone, he’d viciously attack, strangle, sexually assault and brutally murder them.

Obsessed with true crime? Download our new app and never miss a headline

After his arrest in 1978, investigators uncovered thousands of his photographs of women and children, many of whom have never been identified. Decades later, detectives still believe some of these images hold the key to uncovering many more of his victims.

The first victim

Interest in Alcala has surged in recent times, thanks in part to the recent Netflix movie about the killer’s dating show appearance, Woman of the Hour. But the 2024 documentary, Rodney Alcala: America’s Deadliest Serial Killer on Tubi, takes a more factual approach, using archival court footage and interviews with relatives of his victims.

Born in 1943, Alcala grew up in a Mexican-American family in Texas. They temporarily moved to Mexico for three years in 1951 and, after his father abandoned the family, his mother returned to the United States with him and his two sisters, settling in Los Angeles.

On graduating high school, Alcala joined the United States Army and it was during his time as a soldier that the cracks began to show. An army psychologist reported that Alcala had an incredibly high IQ but was also highly manipulative, vindictive and insubordinate, having been disciplined several times for assaulting women. He was medically discharged from the army in 1964.

Returning to California, Alcala studied photography at UCLA and it was during this time that he attempted his first known murder. Spying eight-year-old Tali Shapiro walking on the street, he offered her a lift to school, assuring her he knew her parents. He took her to his Hollywood apartment, where he attacked her.

However, a concerned citizen had followed Alcala’s car and called police, who entered the property and found Shapiro on the floor in a pool of blood. Alcala escaped the scene and disappeared.

Fleeing to New York, Alcala changed his name to “John Berger” and studied film at NYU. Decades later, investigators would also link Alcala to the 1971 murder of flight attendant Cornelia Crilley in her Manhattan apartment around this time.

While working as a children’s camp counsellor in New Hampshire, two young campers recognised him on a wanted poster for charges relating to Shapiro. Consequently, he was arrested and extradited to California to face court.

In an outcome that would later attract significant criticism, Alcala was given a smaller sentence because Shapiro’s family refused to allow the child to testify in court and had moved abroad. As a result, her attacker was found guilty not of attempted murder but of child molestation and put on the sex offenders register. He served just two years in prison for the crime.

Less than two months after his release, Alcala was arrested again. He assaulted 13-year-old “Julie J” after she accepted his offer of a ride to school and served another three years in jail for the lesser offences of marijuana possession and violating parole.

A killer unleashed

In a remarkable decision by his then parole officer, on release in 1977 Alcala was permitted to travel unsupervised from California to New York, where investigators would later conclude he murdered Ellen Hover, the 23-year-old daughter of nightclub owner Herman Hover.

Alcala was interviewed by police about her disappearance and admitted to having known her, but without a body there was no evidence and he was released.

Alcala then returned to California, where he briefly worked as a typesetter at the Los Angeles Times. While there, he showed his photography portfolio to a colleague, who reported seeing many young, naked subjects in vulnerable and compromising positions in the photos.

Around this time, he also took part in a TV dating program, which he won – although the woman who chose him ultimately refused to go on their date, describing Alcala as “creepy”.

In hindsight, her decision likely spared her from spending time alone with a man who was in the midst of a killing spree.

In late 1977, Alcala murdered 27-year-old nurse Georgia Marie Wixted in her Malibu apartment. The following year he brutally killed 32-year-old legal secretary Charlotte Lee Lamb.

Then, in 1979, Alcala picked up 15-year-old hitchhiker Monique Hoyt, drove her to a secluded area, took photos of her in her underwear and subjected her to a brutal, sustained assault. Hoyt escaped while he was in a petrol station loo and reported the attack to police. He was arrested; however, his mother posted his bail and he was released, pending trial.

Not long after, Alcala murdered 21-year-old Jill Marie Parenteau. He left blood at the scene of her Burbank apartment after cutting himself on the broken glass of a window, which was later used as evidence. A week later, he attacked again.

Twelve-year-old Robin Samsoe and her friend had met Alcala on Huntington Beach and he’d offered to photograph them before a nearby adult stepped in. Later that afternoon, Samsoe disappeared as she rode a bike to ballet class. Her decomposing body was found 12 days later dumped in remote terrain. Samsoe’s friend helped detectives to sketch a likeness of Alcala’s face and he was arrested when his parole officer recognised him and notified police.

Justice delayed

Thus began a lengthy legal battle that would span decades for the families of Alcala’s victims. He went on trial for Samsoe’s murder in 1979, was found guilty and sentenced to death. On appeal, however, the sentence was dropped. A second trial in 1985 for the same murder then took place, resulting in Alcala again being found guilty and sentenced to death. That conviction was also overturned, paving the way for a third trial.

The case took a dramatic turn in the early 2000s as advances in DNA technology allowed investigators to revisit unsolved murders with a highly advanced new approach. Investigators gained crucial evidence when DNA recovered from earrings belonging to victims was linked to Alcala.

In 2003, prosecutors successfully joined the Samsoe charges with four newly discovered victims and in February 2010, Alcala stood trial for five murder charges.

For this, his third trial, Alcala chose to act as his own lawyer, personally questioning witnesses and family members of his victims in court. In his unsuccessful defence, Alcala stated that he didn’t remember killing the women.

Ultimately, in March 2010, he was found guilty of all five murders and sentenced to death for a third time.

In 2011, a Manhattan grand jury indicted him for the additional murders of Crilley and Hover and the following year he was extradited to New York. After initially entering not guilty pleas, he later admitted his guilt and was sentenced to 25 years to life for the murders in addition to his death sentence.

How many more?

In 2010, California and NYC police departments released hundreds of Alcala’s photographs to the public in the hope of identifying additional victims. Twenty-one women identified themselves in the photos while six families recognised loved ones who had been missing for years. These discoveries suggested there may have been many more victims than authorities have so far been able to identify.

At least 100 of Alcala’s less explicit photos with unidentified subjects remain posted online today, which police hope viewers will help them to identify. Several women have since come forward to report previously unreported abuse and abductions by Alcala and at least one cold case has been confirmed from these photographs, Alcala spent the rest of his life on death row in a high-security California prison before dying from heart failure in 2021, aged 77.

Despite decades of investigation, the full scale of his offending still remains unclear. The photos he left behind continue to generate leads, but police believe many of the people in those photos may never be identified.

Stream Rodney Alcala: America’s Deadliest Serial Killer for free on Tubi

He was known as “The Dating Game Killer” and formally convicted of murdering seven women and girls.
