Daria Kasatkina has led the Australian charge through the first round of the US Open on day two, eager to end a year of upheaval on a high note.<\/p>\n

The Russian-born world number 18 took down Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-5, 6-1 in an hour and 18 minutes to advance to the second round in New York.<\/p>\n

Kasatkina dropped her first two service games against her 68th-ranked opponent and was broken once more in the first set before finding her groove and closing it out.<\/p>\n

The second frame was more of a procession, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and jogging through the finish line after winning her second match point.<\/p>\n

“I’m so happy because the first match of a slam is always a tough challenge,” she said.<\/p>\n

It has been an eventful year for Kasatkina.<\/p>\n

In March she changed allegiances from Russia<\/a>, where the “international LGBT movement” was ruled an “extremist organisation”<\/a>, to Australia, where she got engaged to partner Natalia Zabiiako in June.<\/p>\n

Kasatkina cut a relieved figure on court after her win, replying “Oi, Oi, Oi” to Australian fans’ “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie” call, saying she was still trying figure out how to juggle everything going on while staying focused on the court.<\/p>\n

“I have to be honest, I could do better,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We’re tennis players but we also have stuff going on outside the tennis court. There’s always something going on in your life.<\/p>\n

A chorus of boos and jeers has rained down on the men’s 13th seed, Daniil Medvedev, at the US Open after his opponent was granted a first serve on match point.<\/p>\n

“Most of the time if you bring it on court then you have to fight those things in your head. I’ve had a lot of changes in the past year, which was not easy to manage.<\/p>\n

“I hope it’s going to be a bit calmer. Now I’m quite settled and really happy about it, all my focus will go on the work and the important things.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes there are moments when you think you are on the bottom, but the way from the bottom is only up, so this is what I’m really looking forward to.”<\/p>\n

Kasatkina next faces Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, who ended the career of France’s Caroline Garcia with a first-round win, in her seventh trip to the second round at Flushing Meadows, while a couple of her new compatriots made it for the first time.<\/p>\n

Adam Walton scored an upset 6-4, 7-6(7\/4), 5-7, 6-1 win over 22nd seed Ugo Humbert for his maiden victory in the main draw in New York.<\/p>\n

The 85th-ranked Walton next faces Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong as he tries to make it into the third round of a slam for the first time.<\/p>\n

Qualifier Priscilla Hon also broke her US Open duck as she took down France’s Leolia Jeanjean 6-3, 7-5 in 93 minutes, for her first win at a grand slam since the 2020 Australian Open.<\/p>\n

The match was a tense affair, especially in the second set, when Hon fought off a set point at 4-5 on her own serve before rattling off three straight games to serve it out at her earliest convenience.<\/p>\n

There was no such luck for Aleksandar Vukic, who was also shooting for his first win at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n

He spent almost four hours on Court 11 against American Jenson Brooksby, who eventually came out on top 6-3, 6-7(4\/7), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.<\/p>\n
