One of Perth’s few remaining independent hardware stores is set to close after more than four decades, with the shop owners saying the business is no longer financially viable.<\/p>\n

The tiny shopfront on Mount Lawley’s Beaufort Street has been selling hardware to the local community for 45 years, but owners Lisa and Glenn Stagg, who’ve owned the business for 23 years, have decided to call time on the shop.<\/p>\n

Ms Stagg said it was simply no longer feasible to keep going.<\/p>\n

“It’s just not really viable anymore to be able to maintain the level of stock and everything in the economy, the way it is today,” she told ABC Radio Perth.<\/p>\n

The Bunnings factor<\/p>\n

While competition from hardware giant Bunnings may have been a factor, Ms Stagg said it was not the primary reason the couple had decided to close down.<\/p>\n

She said the shop had outlasted the two nearest Bunnings stores \u2014 the Beaufort Street Bunnings burnt down in 2018<\/a> and was not rebuilt, and the nearby Morley Bunnings closed in April 2020 and moved to Bayswater.<\/p>\n

But Ms Stagg said the retail giant had influenced her suppliers.<\/p>\n

“Suppliers want bulk buys, they want to give more discounts and rebates for the purchase of more stock, you have to order a certain amount of stock before they’ll deliver,” she said.<\/p>\n

Just how big is Bunnings? <\/a><\/p>\n

Bunnings is super-profitable, but it’s hard to picture its size. From its revenue to its growing home brand products. Bunnings’ numbers continue to boom.<\/p>\n

“It’s not just Bunnings themselves but also, you’ve got the internet.<\/p>\n

“The younger ones are moving into the area in smaller houses or units \u2014 they don’t do DIY and they don’t have gardens so that’s another reason that things quietened down.”<\/p>\n

Ms Stagg said the younger generation of home renovators are more likely to go to Bunnings.<\/p>\n

“Bunnings have done a wonderful job in their advertisements so people no longer say ‘I’m going to go down to the hardware’, they say ‘I’m going to Bunnings’,” she said.<\/p>\n

Community support<\/p>\n

Since the announcement of the closure, Ms Stagg said she had been buoyed by support from long-term customers.<\/p>\n

“Ninety per cent of our customers are regulars, they’ve all come to us loyally and had accounts with us,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Most of them are horrified [about the closure] which is understandable, they’re sad for us but in reality we’re more sad for them.”<\/p>\n

She broke the news on social media.<\/p>\n

Due to downturn in economy and high interest rates and significant drop in sales It\u2019s no longer viable to trade.All stock and fixtures must go so come and grab a bargain and help us to empty shopI would like to thank all our lovely customers that have shopped with us over the years.We will miss you.<\/p>\n

Ms Stagg said after the closure she planned to go and work in another food business the couple owns, while her husband had already started a new job in a different hardware store.<\/p>\n

She said she was also looking forward to taking weekends off.<\/p>\n
