Ms Banney said.

“When your finances feel out of control, it impacts confidence, relationships and mental health.

“This shows money stress is far more common than most people realise.”

About one in four respondents were indifferent about their spending habits while 60 per cent of men and 53 per cent of women said they felt in control of their spending habits.

Ms Banney said shame surrounding spending could often make problems worse.

“Even small steps like tracking spending or setting up automatic savings can restore control,” she said.

“You don’t need to be perfect with money – little changes can make a big difference over time.”

She also urged struggling Aussies not to ignore their problems with finances.

“Take one small step today to get back in control, whether that’s checking your bank balance, setting a budget or asking for help,” Ms Banney said.

“The sooner you act, the sooner the stress starts to lift.”

It comes as Finder’s Cost of Living Pressure Gauge increased from 71 per cent to 73 per cent at the end of July 2025.

The gauge peaked over the past five years at 84 per cent in April and May of 2023 when inflation was just coming off its post-pandemic high of 7.8 per cent.

The cumulative impacts of post-pandemic inflation mean everyday goods are 12.4 per cent more expensive than they were three years ago.

Egg prices are up a whopping 41 per cent with the good soaring 19.1 per cent over the past year alone.

Insurances are up more than 35 per cent, while rents have jumped 19.68 per cent and gas and household fuels are up almost 30 per cent.

More than 3.8 million Aussies’ spending habits have spiralled out of control as mounting cost of living pressures…

[11
71108,64,63,99,18151,164,18154,71107,5465,5939
0":"post-96773","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-economy","8":"tag-alison-banney","9":"tag-au","10":"tag-australia","11":"tag-business","12":"tag-comparison-site","13":"tag-economy","14":"tag-finder","15":"tag-finders-cost-of-living-pressure-gauge","16":"tag-inflation","17":"tag-spending
["GET
