England officially has its next footballing prodigy, with winger Rio Ngumoha becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer following his winner against Newcastle.<\/p>\n

At just 16 years and 361 days, Ngumoha showed composure of a player well beyond his years as he lashed a 100th-minute shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope to give the reigning English Premier League champions a 3-2 win at St James’ Park.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha’s incredible finish came just 4 minutes after he was subbed on for his Premier League debut by coach Arne Slot alongside Harvey Elliott.<\/p>\n

The goal continues what has been a meteoric rise for Ngumoha to begin this season, a rise that has seen him catapult himself firmly into Slot’s first team calculations for the title defence.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha’s goal was the third time he has scored for Liverpool this season, after he scored two goals and registered two assists during pre-season friendlies last month.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha may have only recently become a household name in the wider football world this season, but has been long touted as one of England’s brightest prospects since joining Chelsea’s academy aged eight in 2016.<\/p>\n

Drama between two English power clubs<\/p>\n

After spending eight years at Chelsea, Ngumoha signed with Liverpool in September 2024 after failing to agree on new terms with Chelsea.<\/p>\n

He joined Liverpool after being named the player of the tournament when Chelsea’s Under-16 side were crowned national champions in October 2023.<\/p>\n

Understandably, Chelsea was less than impressed by Ngumoha’s defection to Liverpool after putting so much time into his development during his formative years.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha’s decision sparked some tension at the academy level between Liverpool and Chelsea, with scouts having accreditation access denied for academy matches.<\/p>\n

According to The Athletic<\/a>, Chelsea was the first to deny access to opposition scouts, before Liverpool and Manchester United followed suit. United too had attempted to sign Ngumoha.<\/p>\n

After Ngumoha signed with Liverpool, former Chelsea captain John Terry said<\/a>, “This boy is and will be a top top player”.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha is the second player to flourish after leaving Chelsea’s academy. In 2019, Chelsea sold Jamal Musiala to Bayern Munich for 200,000 euros ($359,222).<\/p>\n

Musiala has since become one of Germany and Bayern’s best players, scoring 45 times in 138 appearances for the club.<\/p>\n

What has been the reaction to Ngumoha’s goal?<\/p>\n

Ngumoha, understandably, said he was “buzzing” after his winner.<\/p>\n

“I’m so happy to score, especially the winner, what a good moment,” he told LFC TV.<\/p>\n

“It was crazy, he [Slot] just looked at me and pointed at me like, ‘Quickly, get ready and you just have to come on and make an impact’, and luckily and thank God I did that.<\/p>\n

“All of my teammates, they’re always encouraging me, if it’s on, to beat my man or take them on, but I’ve just got to mix it up sometimes because if there’s two players there, there might be a pass, a one-two and then you get it back.<\/p>\n

“Normally, last season academy coaches and first team coaches are always saying, ‘Make the back post [run]’, and the fact that I made the back post obviously is just crazy.<\/p>\n

“As the ball came, I just backed myself to score.”<\/p>\n

Premier League legend Thierry Henry, one of the league’s greatest ever goalscorers, was full of praise for the Liverpool youngster on Sky Sports.<\/p>\n

“He announced himself,” he said.<\/p>\n

“He looked like a player that had been playing for a very long time with the way he finished.”<\/p>\n

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk called it a “dream debut” for his young teammate.<\/p>\n

“I’ve said it to him already \u2014 it all starts now. He has to keep working hard and stay humble but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights, you can’t take them for granted if you’re in his position,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I’m sure with the players we have he will be back in training and having a hard session tomorrow again.”<\/p>\n

Slot, too, was amazed at the composure shown by the teenager in such a key moment.<\/p>\n

“Rio can finish so well for his age,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I did hear someone say afterwards in the dressing room he would have taken a first touch, but he is so confident. For his age, he is a really good finisher.”<\/p>\n

Where does Ngumoha rank in the Premier League’s youngest goalscorers list?<\/p>\n

The match against Newcastle was not the first time Ngumoha has made history at Liverpool.<\/p>\n

He was handed his professional debut last season by Slot, who started him in an FA Cup fixture against Accrington Stanley.<\/p>\n

Aged 16 years and 135 days, Ngumoha became the youngest Liverpool player to appear in the FA Cup and the youngest player to start a first-team game for the club.<\/p>\n

Incredibly, Ngumoha was not the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League’s history, with that honour still belonging to James Vaughan, who scored for Everton aged 16 years and 270 days in April 2005.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha’s goal made him the second-youngest player to score a winner in the Premier League, as he fell one day behind Wayne Rooney, who netted a winner for Everton aged 16 years and 360 days in 2002 against Arsenal.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha is now by far the youngest goalscorer ever for Liverpool, surpassing previous record-holder Ben Woodburn, who scored in the League Cup against Leeds United in November 2016.<\/p>\n

A new golden generation incoming for England<\/p>\n

While Ngumoha will understandably excite Liverpool fans, England fans will also be salivating at the prospect of having him represent them at the international level.<\/p>\n

Ngumoha is one of a number of prodigies coming through the ranks for England.<\/p>\n

Arsenal midfielder Max Dowman also attracted headlines this weekend, becoming the second-youngest player to represent the club this weekend after coming on as a substitute in the 5-0 win over Leeds United aged 15 years and 235 days.<\/p>\n

The youngest ever Premier League player is also an Englishman, Dowman’s teammate Ethan Nwaneri, who made his debut in September 2022 aged 15 years and 181 days.<\/p>\n
