A record performance for Nova Scotia at the Canada Games.
Our province won 61 medals at the summer games in St. John’s, Newfoundland, including 21 gold.
That surpasses the summer record of 56.
Chef de mission with Team Nova Scotia Cathy Burton says all competitors need to be celebrated.
“They competed and showed up to fight, and also tried to be the best version of themselves in their event. Regardless of finishes and placements, our athletes went there to contend, and we’re so proud of them.
She says a highlight was seeing teams supporting other teams at the events.
“I would see 3-4 other Team Nova Scotia teams at certain events cheering fellow provincial athletes on, it was truly remarkable to see, and special to be a part of.”
The province sent nearly 470 athletes to the event, and finished fifth in total medals.
“We are small province that has put a lot of time and energy into youth and sport, and we were in or near medal contention in nearly 80 events. I think our finish deserves to be celebrated. Small provinces can do big things.”
Burton says the focus now turns to the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City.
