MONTREAL — There’s always Montreal Canadiens news to be absorbed on a daily basis, but there are only so many hours in a day. On Sundays, we recap the most exciting and relevant NHL news stories that you may have missed throughout the week so that you can stay in the Canadiens loop.

There’s no avoiding it, the Montreal Canadiens are likely to trade Carey Price in the final year of his contract. The move would give the team more financial flexibility moving forward, with the San Jose Sharks and a few other teams emerging as potential trade partners. Everything that comes out about Ivan Demidov paints him as a respectful, dedicated athlete who knows exactly what it takes to reach elite levels, even from a very young age.

The Habs added much-needed centre depth to the lineup by signing 25-year-old forward Joe Veleno. We can’t expect much offence from the Montreal native, but his defensive impact is above average. Most importantly, this is not a signing intended to fill the second-line centre role, as that’s above Veleno’s salary cap hit of just $900,000. [Canadiens Signings – What To Expect From Joe Veleno]
The Bell Centre is one of the busiest arenas in the world, which means scheduling is always complicated. The Montreal Canadiens are set to play 16 back-to-back games next year, including two very difficult stretches that are necessary due to the Olympic break. The good news is that most NHL teams will be dealing with a difficult schedule as well. [Canadiens Given Difficult Schedule With Most B2B Games]
I had no idea recent draft pick Alexander Zharovsky met prospect Ivan Demidov as a youngster, a nice bonus for the organization when you consider how difficult it is to head to a new country as a young man to start your professional career in earnest. What I did know is that many scouts were very high on Zharovsky prior to the draft, and that he has the potential to be a draft-day steal.

“I met Demidov when we were kids, we played on the same team.”

According to Nick Kypreos, the Habs are among the two teams that would interest Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri. With all due respect to Kypreos, I’m not sure Kadri fits the long-term roster construction-plan put in place by Kent Hughes. That being said, he would definitely solve the No.2 centre issue for a couple of years. [Latest Canadiens Trade Rumour – Kadri Willing To Lift NMC]

The Montreal Canadiens had a very young roster last season, usually among the five youngest at any point in the year. They officially took over the top spot this summer, making them the youngest team in the NHL, a testament to the solid work done by Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton, John Sedgwick, and others. We’re almost ready to publish the top 2025 Montreal Canadiens rankings, but before we get going, it’s time to take a retrospective look at how Habs fan voted last season. Juraj Slafkovsky is back in action, honing his craft in Slovakia alongside fellow NHLer Erik Cernak. The two have had several hard-fought battles while playing against each other whenever the Habs and Lightning faceoff, but all bets are off in the summer.

I’m not sure Hutson understands there’s a life outside of hockey. And if I’m being honest, that’s a great sign for the Habs, not to mention the kids who get to learn under his tutelage.
