The Hope College men’s soccer team reaped the fruits of challenging spring workouts and fall camp.

The Flying Dutchmen asserted themselves early against Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday in a matchup of teams that received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, scoring three times during the first half and marching to a 3-0 victory.

It was Hope’s second consecutive victory against the Battling Bishops, the defending North Coast Athletic Conference champions.

“I’m extremely proud of our guys for yes, playing a good soccer game — we know we’re a good team — but we’ve been pressing them last spring and this fall, to win the game between the ears: how we move as a team, how we talk as a team, how we organize as a team. The guys did a phenomenal job doing that tonight.”

Hope led for all but 2 ½ minutes.

Sophomore Jackson Mindling (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian HS) struck quickly, burying a cross from junior Evan Tsandes (Park City, Utah / Park City) into the lower right corner of the net from 16 yards out.

The Flying Dutchmen doubled their lead at the 22:56 mark. Senior Seth Walters (St. Joseph, Michigan / St. Joseph) pounced when Ohio Wesleyan failed to clear a 70-yard pass from junior Evan Morrison (Canton, Michigan / Canton), dribbling a few feet near the goal line before scoring.

Two-and-a-half minutes later, sophomore Ryker Corstange (Richland, Michigan / Gull Lake) tipped the ball past a charging OWU keeper and buried a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.

Hope outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 8-2. Senior goalkeeper Jack McDaniel (Portage, Michigan / Portage Northern) recorded two saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start.

The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. at home against the Milwaukee School of Engineering, a 5-1 winner at Calvin University on Friday.
