A Texas-based telecommunications company expanded its fiber internet network into Northeast Pennsylvania.

Service from Gigapower LLC — which started its fiber buildout in Pennsylvania in 2024 — is now available in locations throughout the region, including Blakely, Dickson City, Dunmore, Jessup, Nanticoke, Olyphant, Sugar Notch, Throop and Warrior Run, company officials announced Wednesday.

“We are excited to provide high-speed fiber connectivity to these communities, enabling them to experience future-ready broadband,” Gigapower CEO Bill Hogg said in a news release.

In May 2013, AT&T partnered with BlackRock to form Gigapower.

Gigapower’s commercial wholesale open access platform enables internet service providers and other businesses to access its multigig fiber network in select metro areas throughout the country, officials said.

Another telecommunications company — New Jersey-based Astound Broadband — announced plans in July to invest $42 million to upgrade and expand its fiber-optic network in Northeast Pennsylvania, including Scranton.

Once completed at the end of 2026, the expansion project will provide 53,000 homes and 2,900 businesses throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne counties with access to Astound’s network, officials said.

As more companies look to offer service in Northeast Pennsylvania, Lackawanna County Commissioners Bill Gaughan and Chris Chermak voted in July to award a two-year, $156,300 contact to Harrisburg-based consulting firm Herbert, Rowland & Grubic Inc. to create a broadband assessment plan for the county with the goal of identifying service gaps and addressing them in future projects, expanding access to high-speed internet for residents and businesses.

The project will help the county target specific areas with a goal of building out new connection points that other internet service providers could use to reach underserved or unserved county residents in rural communities.

Additionally, the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority was awarded a $2.4 million grant to expand high-speed internet access in parts of Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. With a required 80% private sector match, the award represents an estimated investment of more than $4.3 million in broadband infrastructure for Northeast Pennsylvania, officials said. The grant, funded through the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment program, will support infrastructure upgrades to deliver reliable, affordable broadband service to homes and businesses currently lacking access.
