Most Canadian retaliatory tariffs on about $60 billion worth of US goods have been lifted as of today.
Ottawa had ordered the move in response to the U.S. trade war and the Trump White House’s aggressive tariffs on Canadian goods.
However, Trump eventually watered down those tariffs to apply only to goods not covered under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade agreement.
On August 22, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada would match that move, arguing the retaliatory tariffs were a sticking point in negotiations.
Canadian counter tariffs remain on some U.S. items like steel and aluminum, targeting aggressive American levies on those products from Canada.
After a meeting last week with his U.S. counterpart, Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, said progress is being made on a trade deal with the US, but they were not on the verge of an agreement.
