With flags waving and grills sizzling, hundreds turned out to enjoy a day of unity and entertainment

Families and workers united at the Roberta Bondar Pavillion this afternoon for the city’s 66th Labour Day celebration.

Hosted by the Sault Ste. Marie Labour Council, workers from a wide variety of unions came together to celebrate the day with a parade of flags and fun family activities.

Face painting, a barbecue, a bicycle giveaway, and a motorcycle show were among the activities at this year’s holiday gathering — which has its roots in the Canadian labour movement dating back to the 19th century.

“It’s our way of supporting the members, advocating for the members, and getting together and supporting the labour movement,” said Linda Souliere, VP with UFCW Locals 175 and 633.

Along with supporting the labour movement, Monday’s gathering was about having fun.

“It’s good that everybody’s educated and realizes the hardships … through the labour movement over the years, and it’s definitely something that gets left on the light side,” said Cory Burke, from the Iron Workers Local 786.

The iron workers union organized the bicycle giveaway and motorcycle show for all to enjoy.

“We give the bikes away — we started that years ago, and now everybody just jumped on board and it’s a good thing,” Burke said.
