The Toronto Maple Leafs have decided to join the Montreal Canadiens in the deep end as they try to find a top-six forward who can add the firepower they need.
With the NHL season quickly approaching, the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have to act fast if they want a chance to add a top six player before the end of the preseason and bring in the best possible addition to push their team over the top.
Toronto’s Competition For Top-Six Forward Involves Familiar Face
It’s been a discussion all summer and with time running out, things are getting a bit more hectic as the days tick on and it’s only expected to get even harder.
That might have a bit to do with their most heated rivals, the Montreal Canadiens also vying for a top-six forward and have much more assets to do so. According to RG.org’s Marco D’Amico, the Canadiens are trying to get something done ASAP:
The Canadiens will be active on the trade market again in-season if they can’t secure a top-six piece before training camp; one source has hinted that the team has already sized up a few teams and will kick the can with them again down the line.
While we don’t know who exactly, we do know that the team has been linked to Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann, who is also being attached to the Maple Leafs and would help both teams equally given his offensive potential.
Why Toronto Can’t Compete With Other Teams In The Trade Market
It’s going to be tough for Toronto to put out a suitable offer without overpaying and unless they want to get rid of their final first round pick in the next three years, as well as maybe mortgaging their defensive future with Ben Danford; they are going to have to get creative. But besides Easton Cowan, they don’t have a ton of outstanding pieces to make a one or two for one deal, and if they get torched yet again from letting a rookie go before his time; the fans are not going to let up on Brad Treliving, that’s for sure.
Without more premium picks and assets, Toronto has to deal from a very limited deck, and there’s barely any face cards let alone aces.
But maybe they can get lucky, and Montreal will fold their hand as a safety measure, meaning the Maple Leafs should go all-in.
