We are on to the round of 16 in the 2025 US Open. The year’s final Grand Slam tournament has seen plenty of upsets, drama and thrilling action as we head toward the second and final week of the event.

The match of the day between No. 23 seed Naomi Osaka and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff had plenty of hype, but the final result hardly lived up to the billing. Osaka took care of Gauff in straight sets to move on to her first quarterfinals since the 2021 Australian Open, which she won. In fact, Osaka has history on her side: she’s won every slam when she’s made the quarterfinals. It was a frustrating day for Gauff, however, who continues to look out of sorts since her French Open victory earlier this year.

On the men’s side, favorites like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic made relatively quick work of the competition as they advanced to the quarterfinals. Djokovic hadn’t played since Wimbledon entering this tournament and wasn’t at his best throughout the first week of the tournament. However, he looked in much better form on Sunday.

The top American men were nearly all eliminated in one fell swoop in the third round. Ben Shelton, the No. 6 seed, was likely on his way to a win over Adrian Mannario when he suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to retire. Then, two-time semifinalist in this event, Frances Tiafoe, was taken out by veteran Jan-Lennard Struff. And in the final match of the round, No. 14 Tommy Paul battled through his own physical issues but couldn’t overcome No. 23 Alexander Bublik, who has yet to have his serve broken in the event.

Now, all hopes fall to No. 4 Taylor Fritz, who made the final a year ago. He’ll take on No. 20 Tomas Machac in the fourth round.
