Microsoft’s most recent updates have been a nightmare for many users, with reports of failed installs, emergency fixes and even disappearing SSD drives. The Windows-maker will hope September is better — which is critical. Because for hundreds of millions of users, the update now due in just a few days is a game-changer.
Following Microsoft’s surprising u-turn on Windows 10 support, with an essentially free 12-month extension suddenly offered to all, Windows 11 upgrades slipped into reverse. More than half of all users were on Windows 11 by the end of July — but not any more.

Windows 10’s market share is up on a month ago, at least according to Statcounter’s illustrative data, leaving more than 700 million users who can’t or won’t ‘t upgrade relying on an extended support option to ensure their PCs remain protected.
To claim the 12-month support extension, you need to click the “Enroll” button on the Windows 10 update panel. The good news is you have 3 choices, including essentially free or paid multi-PC options. The bad news is most don’t yet have the button, which is rolling out “in waves.” And until you get it, it’s “impossible” to claim the extension.
How to enroll.
Windows Latest
Microsoft has assured that all Windows 10 users will get the button in time to enroll, and you must do this by October 13 to ensure you don’t miss out. That’s the day before Windows 10’s long-awaited formal end-of-life date on October 14.
The next Windows 10 update is expected a week from now, and it’s critical that you update as soon as it’s available and check for that enrollment option. Then you should claim the ESU immediately if you intend to stay on Windows 10. Don’t miss out.

Microsoft has confirmed that the “last update” for Windows 10 users who have not confirmed an ESU option will be in October. Before that final update rolls around, be sure you have protected your PC for at least the next year.
Meanwhile, Microsoft will be hoping for a smoother ride with September’s updates in general, and the awkward reverse in Windows 11 upgrades is a blip and not a new trend.
