An 80-year-old woman was severely injured in an attack downtown on Sunday morning.

Emergency responders were called to the area of Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street at about 9:40 a.m. The victim was found unconscious on the sidewalk and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived but was later identified. He was arrested on Sunday night.

“It is believed the two had met previously but were not close acquaintances,” a police news release states. “There is no ongoing threat to public safety.”

A 34-year-old Guelph man is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Police continue to investigate.
