While the Meta Quest 2 still holds the title for the most popular VR headset on Steam, making up 31.35% of headset owners, its successor is quickly catching up, according to the latest survey results for August 2025. Quest 3 usage grew nearly 7% compared to this time last month, and the cheaper Quest 3S has also proven to be a popular choice, less than a year since it launched.
The Quest 3 series is the latest and greatest from Meta. The Quest 3S is the most recent, releasing last October as a budget-friendly version of the original model. In our Quest 3S review, we said it “ticks all the right boxes,” and the non-S model does much the same, but with better hardware. On the other side of the coin, Valve’s own Index headset is falling out of favor.
VR gaming remains pretty niche, though ownership is slowly climbing. For reference, only 1.63% of Steam users reportedly own a headset, and the Quest series (formerly known as Oculus) remains by far the most popular. As seen in the stats for August 2025, the Meta Quest 3 now enjoys a 23.32% share of the VR market, with the 3S sitting at 6.72%.

In the July 2025 results (you’ll have to visit the Wayback Machine for this), the Valve Index was just ahead of the Meta Quest 3, so the latter has now overtaken it by a sizeable margin to leave the two Quest headsets battling on top. The Quest 2 remains incredibly popular and a great budget choice, but the fact that you can buy a 3S for a similar price these days makes it the more appealing low-cost option, assuming you want to avoid the used market.

Quest headsets offer excellent versatility thanks to their built-in Android-based Meta Horizon OS, which means you don’t even need to pair them with a PC to play games. As such, there are many more Quest owners outside of the Steam ecosystem, but if you want to play some more demanding titles, playing via your gaming PC is the way to go.
