Update from the town of CBS as of 10:00 p.m. Tuesday;
The town of Conception Bay South has provided an update on the State of Emergency called as a result of a water main break that has drastically depleted the town’s water supply.
The source of the leak has been identified as coming from pipe owned and managed by the St. John’s Regional Water Authority. Repairs are underway and an update will be provided in the morning.
The town has a limited reserve of emergency water supply that is available for fire suppression activities only. As a result and with resident safety at the forefront, directives concerning business closures and water conservation remain in place with the following exceptions:
🔸Effective 8.00 am tomorrow, Pharmacies may open for urgent prescription services only.
🔸If located within a grocery store, only the pharmacy section may open for prescriptions only.
🔸Gas stations may open for fuel sales only.
Businesses operating under the exemption must provide appropriate hygiene measures for their staff, including hand washing capability and toilet services.
Garbage and recycling pick up will go ahead as usual, but all other town facilities will remain closed to the public.
As a precautionary measure, residents may want to switch off the breaker to hot water tanks to prevent issues with heating elements. Properly installed plumbing should limit any issues.
The town pf CBS will provide updates as they become available from the City of St. John’s.
Earlier update
A break in the main water line feeding the town of Conception Bay South from Bay Bulls Big Pond has resulted in a State of Emergency in the town.
In a post to social media, the town says it appears its water supply will be “completely depleted in short order, meaning there will be no water available for homes or businesses.”
All businesses were directed to close immediately to conserve water for emergency and fire department use only.
A mandatory water conservation order is also in effect, and all residents are being asked to use water only in an emergency.
A timeline on repairs is not known at this time and there’s no immediate word on whether the situation will affect the start of school in CBS tomorrow.
The St. John’s Regional Water Authority is overseeing repairs on the main transmission line.
The town says it is working closely with regional partners and emergency services to address the situation, and updates will be provided as they become available.
Tonight’s regular council meeting has also been cancelled.
