The One World Soccer tournament unites diverse communities to play soccer and build connections.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Bringing the community together, all in one space, to play soccer.
That’s one of the goals of the One World Soccer tournament, which is hosted by two local groups: Bridges from Borders and the The Buffalo Maendeleo Soccer Club.
The tournament unites players from all backgrounds, to help build connections and a more unified city. Many of the kids participating come from immigrant and refugee communities.
“Kids might not have the opportunity to get together with kids from other different communities. We make it possible right here through some friendly competition,” said Samantha Dalka, program coordinator with Bridges from Borders.
The tournament wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Dobson Field, with the championship game and closing ceremonies.
“You can see all the kids from different colors and different backgrounds. They are having fun. They don’t care how things are going, but they are happy to play soccer and meet other people,” said Gabriel Shalamba, president of The Buffalo Maendeleo Soccer Club.
