A new children’s book from a Yellowknife author shares a story of resilience, kindness and friendship.
Northern Quill Publishing announced the publication of The Last Tree in a Tuesday news release.
The NWT-based publishing house said the book, written by Erika Nyyssonen and illustrated by Lucas Green, “shines with northern spirit.”
According to Northern Quill’s description, The Last Tree tells the story of a lonely spruce growing beyond the treeline who meets passing animals. Just when it seems like the tree will be alone forever, new friendships begin to take root.
“This beautifully illustrated tale reminds readers that when kindness is planted, even the loneliest hearts can bloom,” Northern Quill stated.
Nyyssonen, who has lived in Yellowknife her whole life, is also the author of Gus and Pogo Go to the Vet.
Nyyssonen previously worked with Green, a Vancouver-based illustrator, on the award-winning graphic novel King Warrior, which she co-authored with her husband Jay Bulckaert.

Northern Quill said The Last Tree was selected from 24 submissions during its 2024 intake process for publishing.
Co-owner Amber Henry said the story “stood out with its beautiful message of northern strength and unity.”
Nyyssonen is one of several authors set to attend a northern book fair taking place at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre on November 8 from 10am till 2pm.
The Last Tree is available at Yellowknife Books, Signed, Sundog Trading Post, the Yellowknife Historical Museum and Northern Quill Publishing’s website.
