Stage 12 – Thursday September 4
Laredo to Los Corrales de Buelna
Distance: 144.9km (90 miles)
Profile: Medium mountain stage
Stage 12: More uphills, more scope for GC battles

A curious stage of the Vuelta, with two big climbs positioned far apart. The second category Puerto de Alisas caps out just over 41km into the day, with flat to undulating ground following prior to the start of the category one Collada de Brenes 74km later. That climb is 7km long and averages eight percent. The descent and flat run in to the finish gives opportunity for a partial regrouping, but any large differences made on the climb could prove important.

Race director Fernando Escartín:

“Cantabria will, again, give us a fast, agitated and fun stage. The climb to Alisas may serve to attempt the escape of the day and the tough ascent to Collada de Brenes in the final part will be decisive. The favorite riders will have to make sure to not fall behind in the summit as the final stretch before the finish-line will be very fast.”
