Greater St. John’s is about to become the home of the first purpose-built film and television soundstage east of Montreal which the players say will boost Newfoundland and Labrador’s media production industry to new heights.
Latitude 47, a private company in Toronto founded by several people including some producers in the film industry, says the $50-million studio will be built in the town of Bauline, which overlooks Conception Bay.
One of those behind the project, Andrew Barnsley, says the company will grow and sustain production in Newfoundland as a year-round industry instead of a one-season industry.
Barnsley says the facility, which will look like a mini community, will help them meet growing demand, attract larger production, and position the province as a world-class production destination.
The plan is for the province to become a magnet not just for domestic production but international production.
