James Gunn and the rest of the DC Universe celebrated the announcement of Man of Tomorrow this week, and in a surprise reaction, MCU star Simu Liu also chimed in on the film’s release, and what it could mean for his hopes of a Shang-Chi 2.

What did Simu Liu say about Man of Tomorrow?

In a recent series of posts on social media, Liu congratulated Gunn on the announcement, while also seeming to hint at his own frustration about the lack of a sequel to 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings.

In a reply to a post about how shocking it is that a Superman sequel is coming out so quickly after the film’s release, Liu replied with a simple emoji of a smiley face making a blank stare. Fans were quick to interpret the message as dissatisfaction about the status of Shang-Chi 2.

In a separate post, Liu replied to Gunn’s post about Man of Tomorrow directly, this time with a simple thumbs-up emoji. Fans once again took to replying to the post with speculation, noting that Liu seemed frustrated in general over the quick turnaround time between Superman and Man of Tomorrow.

A sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was originally reported to be in development in 2021, with Destin Daniel Cretton said to be returning to write and direct the film. Since then, though, the film’s status has mostly been in limbo. Liu said in 2023 that the film was being continually delayed, and reports at the time suggested the film would release after the then-planned Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which Cretton was tapped to direct.

Cretton would go on to drop out of Kang Dynasty, though, and join Spider-Man: Brand New Day as director in 2024. The latest report on Shang-Chi 2 notes that the film is still in development, but has taken a backseat as Cretton works on Brand New Day, which has been filming this year and is scheduled to release on July 31, 2026.
