GREENSBORO, N.C.—The William & Mary men’s golf team put together a solid third-place showing in its season opening event, the Bryan National Collegiate, on Saturday and Sunday in Greensboro, N.C. W&M was led by stellar individual showings by Preston Burton and Talon Dingledine, finishing fourth and T8 respectively.
 
The 54-hole event had its final 36 holes played on Sunday after the second round on Saturday was moved due to rain. The Tribe shot team scores of 284-296-286 for a 2-over total, finishing behind tournament champion Wake Forest at 24-under and runners-up Wofford at 1-over.
 
Burton posted a trio of scores in red figures through consistent play all weekend. The junior opened up with a 70 in the opening round on Bryan Park’s par-72 Champions Course. He followed that up with scores of 71 and 5-under 67 on Sunday. Both his first and final round featured only one bogey each. He made four birdies and an eagle in the third round and finished tied for first in par-4 scoring amongst the field for the event at 1-under.
 
Freshman Talon Dingledine had a stellar collegiate debut and found himself at 6-under and in second place heading into the final round after playing the first two rounds in 70 and 68. Dingledine fired a 74 in the third round to finish with a 4-under total. He led the field in both par-3 scoring and birdies (17) on the weekend. Dingledine birdied holes five through seven in the opening round and four through seven in the final 18.
 
Matthew Monastero finished on a high note in his W&M debut, firing a 2-under 70 in the third round shooting a bogey-free 32 on the front nine. He posted a 1-over 73 in the first round before shooting 82 on Sunday morning. The graduate student finished T-46.
 
Grady Williams and Luke Walmet rounded out the Green and Gold lineup with totals of 14 and 15-over for T-55 and T-63 respectively. Williams shot scores of 78-77-75 with Walmet posting 71-80-80.
 
Playing as an individual James Gayle tied Williams in his college debut with scores of 79-73-78.
 
As a team the Tribe was second in the 14-team field in pars, third in par-4 scoring and third in birdies.
 
Tim Pemberton‘s squad returns to action at The Goat hosted by Navy on Sept. 20-21.
