Before the St. Louis Cardinals push for their fourth straight series win as they travel to Seattle to take on the Mariners, the team announced multiple roster moves.

In an announcement that includes the Cardinals activating Alec Burleson from the IL, promoting Nick Raquet for his MLB debut, and demoting Andre Granillo to Triple-A, St. Louis also DFA’d utility man Garrett Hampson.

Hampson, 30, was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on June 24. This was the utility man’s third major league team this season and fifth in the last two.

Why did the Cardinals DFA Garrett Hampson?

Heading into their series against the Mariners, St. Louis has made a convincing push in recent days for a spot in the postseason. With three weeks remaining in the season, the Cardinals are just 4.5 games behind the New York Mets for the final Wild Card spot.

With this being said, St. Louis is still pushing to make this happen, despite the trials and tribulations it has taken to get back on track this season.

The Cardinals had to make room for Alec Burleson as he returned from a wrist inflammation injury, and Hampson happened to be the player that St. Louis wanted to move on from.

Garrett Hampson’s production at the plate this season has been iffy, but his ability to play throughout the rotation is what teams have valued since he made his debut in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies.

In 62 games with three different teams this season, he has a .143 batting average, .250 on-base percentage, .169 slugging percentage, and a .419 OPS while tallying one RBI and three stolen bases.
