Weekly, SportsCage.com contributors from around Western Canada collaborate to rank the Canadian Football League teams. After week 14, a new team is atop the ranking in the Saskatchewan Roughriders, while the biggest movers were the Edmonton Elks.
Labour Day rematch weekend is in the books in the Canadian Football League.
We start with the Saskatchewan Roughriders winning a rematch in Winnipeg for the first time since 2018, as they topped the Blue Bombers 21-13.
The win moves the Riders past Calgary into the top spot on the ranking.
The loss and subsequent 6-6 record sees the Bombers drop from third to fourth. More concerning for Winnipeg is the health of quarterback Zach Collaros, who left in the third quarter after absorbing a C.J. Reavis hit on a quarterback sack.
Ottawa came from behind to stun B.C. 34-33 in the nation’s capital. The win moves Ottawa out of the basement and into eighth, while B.C. drops from fifth to seventh.
Meanwhile, in B.C., the question begs to be asked: What is happening to the Lions’ defence late in games after coughing up another lead? You can bet they are asking that question on the left coast.
In Montreal, the search for consistent quarterback play continues with Davis Alexander, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, and Caleb Evans all hurt. The nine-point offensive output at home against Hamilton has the contributors nervous. The loss drops the Alouettes to the basement of the power rankings despite being second in the East Division.
The last game of the week was a jaw dropper with Edmonton upsetting Calgary 31-19. Was it a blip or a trend for the Stampeders? We will have to wait and see until after their bye week. That said, the loss drops the Stamps into the number two spot this week.
Regarding the Edmonton Elks, call it a little sprinkle of Jesus on the rankings, as quarterback Cody Fajardo has led the EE to wins in four of their last five games. That momentum has lifted the Elks from eighth up three spots to fifth in a week.
Lastly, a bye week did not hurt the Toronto Argonauts as they held firm in the sixth spot.
