Ravens’ Kyle Hamilton nearly scored the first 1-point safety in NFL history originally appeared on The Sporting News

Every point was at a premium on Sunday Night Football in Week 1.

The Buffalo Bills stormed back in epic fashion to defeat the Baltimore Ravens, 41-40. And a couple days later, the game is still providing more memories to digest.

One of these: There was almost a 1-point safety.

And yes, that’s a real thing.

A safety is normally worth 2 points, if an offensive player is tackled with the ball in the end zone, or if the offensive team commits a flag in the end zone, or if the offensive team fumbles the ball out of the end zone.

But on an extra-point attempt or a 2-point conversion try, any resulting safety is worth 1 point.

There has never been a 1-point safety in NFL history. And for good reason: Why would a player get the ball on a botched point after attempt, only to leave his own end zone and then run back into it?

Well, Sunday night, Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton had quite the idea.

He intercepted a Buffalo 2-point conversion pass attempt, and he started to return it. Then, he decided to pitch backward. He tossed it from outside the end zone back to Kyle Van Noy, who was standing in the end zone.

Van Noy knew there was no return on, but he also knew he couldn’t go down in the end zone now.

Brilliantly, Van Noy stepped outside of the painted area to take a knee at the 1-yard line, avoiding the 1-point safety.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh? Not happy with Hamilton.

“I told him that I questioned whether he actually graduated Notre Dame or not,” Harbaugh said. “I thought that was one of the most foolish things I’ve ever seen. He agreed and it should never happen again.”

The Ravens cost themselves another single point later in the one-point loss on a Tyler Loop missed extra point.

But this point would’ve not just been costly. If it had happened, it would’ve been historic.
