HIGH POINT, N.C. – The No. 10 Marshall Men’s Soccer team (1-0-3) played to a 2-2 draw at No. 12 High Point (3-0-2) on Tuesday night, with defender Thiago Apolinario scoring twice.
Â
“I thought our lads played very well today. We created a ton of chances, more in the second half. We just need to get over the hump and turn some of these draws into wins,” Herd Men’s Soccer Head Coach Chris Grassie said. “I feel like our new group is starting to get it, and I can see how close we are to becoming the team we can be. Set pieces helped us today, but also hurt us again. If we can take what we need to learn and add that little extra grit defensively of set pieces, we will be capable of championships again this season.”
Â
The match’s closing minutes featured a flurry of momentum swings. Trailing since the seventh minute, Marshall nearly went 2-0 before a VAR review took away a High Point goal with a handball happening earlier on the field of play to give MU a penalty kick. The Herd leveled the score in the 79th minute when Thiago Apolinario converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.
Â
Lightning struck twice as Marshall took the lead seven minutes later with Apolinario finishing a header off a corner by Yasha Schaerer to go up 2-1. High Point found an immediate response, equalizing less than a minute after Marshall moved in front.
Â
The Panthers equalized on a Mo Guettel goal on a free kick delivery from Jefferson Amaya at the 86:21 mark.
Â
Amaya also assisted on the home side’s first goal of the contest in the seventh minute by Lukas Kamrath.
Â
Marshall kept HPU on its toes outshooting them 15-7, including 10-3 in shots on goal.
